“There’s really not much we can do but believe whatever documents were authorized by the high school,” said one university admissions officer, who asked for anonymity. “It’s hard to tell which paper was fabricated when you have students and teachers collaborating in the scheme.” |

Two years ago, when Mrs. Lee’s 20-year-old son was found to have lied on his college application papers and later got expelled from his university, she was furious. But she wasn’t angry because he had acted immorally; rather, she was more upset because, in her mind, it was useless to blame him for something everyone else did, too. |
Korean culture just never quits. Corruption, fraud, bribery, etc etc etc Ad nauseam.
In college admissions, lies outsmart

Before the apologists arrive let me say that there is corruption in every country. Having stated that, however, let me say another thing. In most Western countries it's the corrupt 1% who engage in such unscrupulous behavior. In my experience it is not the 99%. They are the one's rightly outraged by the minority of corrupt people.
In Korea, however, it seems that the corrupt are the 99%. From Samsung CEO's to the lowliest mum and pop hogwan corruption is rampant here. Politicians, the police, school boards, and pretty much everyone else. Even Koreans admit it (while engaging in it themselves). As your adult students what they dislike most about Korea and they'll likely say the corruption. But they would never dream of engaging in it themselves, however. |

Corruption exists everywhere, but it thrives in Korea. |

If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin' hard enough.
Those who cheat in SK, whether on tests or whatever, unfortunately seem to be this society's role models. |

If it weren't for cheating or stealing, then we wouldn't be as far along as we are today. Society needs indiscretion if it is to progress. Individuals are needed, but only as a source. |

I do, but nobody wants to steal my piece of shit car. Actually, I meant the stealing of ideas. |

I think youve completly missed the point.
Its about taking peoples ideas but then not claiming them as your own. No one would deny we need to stand on the shoulders of giants to touch the sky, but saying we are floating is ethically wrong. |

You need to steal a better car. Otherwise, you're standing in the way of progress.
As for ideas, theft is theft. They call it intellectual PROPERTY for a reason. |

Yes, but we both know that people get away with things. Progress is subjective. I was referring to progress in the most shallow way possible, exclusive of morals. Sure, I am completely in favor of your vision, but there are quite a few who aren't, and they tend to succeed in this world. |

If theft were theft, then muggings, shoplifting, and armed robberies and bank heists would be as common here as back home. They do happen here, but I think the tables might be turned on which countries had high rates amongst OECD nations. I for one enjoy not having bulletproof glass at my liquor stores, gas stations, and banks here. Something I could not say about back home. And I doubt the pizza place down the road has been robbed at gun/knife point 7 times in 6 years, unlike the joint I worked at in college.
Theft is not theft. Intellectual property theft is not the same as robbery. |

The larger issue here is obviously the Korean education system.
For starters, it would help if the universities would actually have, y'know, some standards. A Korean university student can skip every class in a term, then go have a drink with the prof and get a passing grade. It's very common outside of the three or four actually good universities in the country, completely ridiculous and ultimately self-harming. |

Kind of like American universities during the Vietnam War ear, where it was common practice just to pass every draftable-aged male student, so they can delay service if drafted.
I know they are two different things, but maybe (or maybe not) there are reasons for this madness. Probably about money, don't want a rep that a private university is known to fail students and therefor gets no students. Also, I wouldn't say it's common in the public universities, but for sure is in the smaller provincal private ones. |
