US Plans Extra Reduction of Troops From Korea
A military expert said further reduction of the USFK seemed inevitable given that the two brigades of the division are the main fighting horses and the others, including the air force, are backup forces. The United States has kept some 37,000 troops in South Korea to deter North Korea's 1.1 million-strong armed forces, the world's fifth largest. South Korea has 690,000 troops.

What gets me is for the whole time I've been here they have complaining about the U.S. prescence and protesting for them to leave.

So now the U.S. pulls out 10% of its force(with probably more to come) and the South Koreans all of a sudden become worried that the North may attack them.

FOR GOD SAKES, MAKE UP YOUR FRIGGING MIND

I thought they would be happy.

Have you ever thought for just one moments there could be different political opinion groups in Korea? There are so many people on this board asking Koreans to make their own mind, have one voice, calling "them" hypocrites. But... do you really believe they should have one voice? Hein?

Hate? I thought this thread was going to be about leaving the hate-mongering of several posters at Dave's Cafe. I should have known better, since it was posted by Real Reality, who occasionally appears to convey serious even if latent resentment toward some things Korean. Or maybe it's just healthy frustration that's fed and festers.

The trouble is, that often the same groups that have called for the U.S. to leave turn out to be the same ones who get up in arms when the U.S. does decide to re-align/remove personnel.

My comment is more out of frustration. It is just that both ends of the political spectrum are so vocal and always trying to outdo one another and we are stuck in the middle being representatives of the west.[/quote]

I don't think so.

At U.S. request, troop cut plan was kept secret
National Assembly defense committee members from ruling and opposition parties are voicing concern over the withdrawal. Grand National Party lawmaker Lee Kyung-jae fretted that the move was "leading to the parting of the U.S-Korea blood alliance." Our Open Party's chairman Shin Ki-nam said, "Our alliance stands firm. The transfer of troops has nothing to do with our delay in Korean troops' dispatch to Iraq."

Are the People's Worries a Sign of USFK Dependence?
The uneasiness and confusion rising among the Korean people is directly linked to the government's failure to present any authoritative interpretation of the current situation. People's trust in the government's economic policy has been an issue for the past year. Now the confidence issue is spreading onto diplomatic and national security matters that are directly linked to the well-being of its citizens and the nation's future.

i was told tonight by a 32-year old Korean woman that Korea is divided because of Russia, China and the US. they just don't get it....they got nuclear freedom in 1945 thanks to USA's fat boy and half of their country back in 1953 thanks to a Korean named McArthur...in so many ways it's hopeless to rail against this madness. if the US ever did pull out of here with the NK "pygmy" (gotta quote Dubya on that!) still behaving like a paranoid, schitzophrenic, rollie-pollie whacko, i would be on the next flight....

Real Reality: You are the consummate alarmist and dissolutionist; why do you stay? Your posts demonstrate a well- articulated antithapy toward this land, so the obvious question must be: why do you stick around? Is it purely for financial reasons (that one I can relate to); or is there an emotional connection? Or is this all grist for a future novel and/or expose? In any event, you don't appear to be happy here, but admittedly you do a splendid job of turning over rocks to see what crawls out. Cheers.

I'm with Dogbert on this one. It seems that especially the newspapers play both sides of the fence. It gets frustrating and tiresome.

At no time during the big anti-American wave during the election were there informative articles about the consequences of a troop withdrawal or reduction.

US Will Pull Out 4,000 Troops From Korea by Aug. 15
http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200405/kt2004051918283711990.htm

Celebrate August 15 in a big way. Pull out 35,000 troops to celebrate Liberation Day. The U.S. troops could have a big parade to an airport or port.

Liberation Day
With the official surrender of Japan to the Allied forces on August 15, 1945, the 35-year colonization of Korea by the Japanese came to an end. August 15, 1948 also marks the establishment of the Republic of Korea.

Seoul's plan to send troops to Iraq argued should be reconsidered. Pyo Myung-yul, retired Army brigadier general, said South Korea shouldn't participate in the war of aggression, triggered by the U.S. "The (Seoul-Washington) mutual defense agreement didn't say that we have to help the U.S. invade some other country," he said. "The essence of the agreement is to help each other when one side is attacked (by other forces)."
"We no longer need to worry about the North's threat, since we are superior to it in every aspect," he said.
