| Your monthly salary at SKKU was only 2.835/month, but how did you end up with 45 mil annual salary? Is it the maximum salary you can get when you add all the overtime hours and include teaching during winter and summer breaks? I still don't get it. |
No. Where did you get that my monthly salary was 2.835? It was 3,461,438. The 45mil is what you get with 13 salaries because it included severance. That's not the max. Most people made more. People could make 60mil plus. LIke I said, stuff has changed. There was one month I made over 10 mil because of all the work I did during break, plus my regular pay, plus severance. If they're only pay 2.835 a month, that's a heck of a lot less than they were paying when I left 3 years ago. And the cost of living has gone up. |
Where? From here:

That's great news Naturegirl! Only heard good things about that position. Good work environment, and really strong reputation (top 5) so your students should be very bright (side note: they're Samsung's official affiliate university in Korea, so they recieve a ton of funding from them. If it's good enough for Samsung... )
This year, I heard the base salary is 2.835/month for 15 hours BUT they provide an additional "special allowance" equal to one-month's pay at the completion of your year (Most universities don't provide this. "Severance pay" as you may know is typically provided in hagwon and PS contracts).
So do the math, and that essentially translates to over 3.0 million + lots of opportunities for on-campus overtime I've heard.
Housing not included, but I believe that Suwon has their own rooms nearby, so you wouldn't have to worry about key money at least. Someone else would have to confirm that though.
Vacation- think you get full vacation (ie. approx 4 to 5 months a year), with the option, but maybe a "hope" that you will at least elect to work one of the 5 week camps in either the summer or winter break. Hope that helps. |
It seems you and other people got the same package. Read the page 1 of this thread:

No? And you didn't stay there long. Mind telling us why? |

| That post was from 2009. I started in 2010 at 45 mil. Same salary as everyone else. I stayed 3 years. I left because I got a better offer. And my current job gives me one day off per week, which is a great added plus since I'm a single mom. I"ve PMed you. I'd be happy to answer any more questions via PM. |

So 45 mil. is for 13 mo salaries (12 salaries + a severance), that is, that's what you get if you leave after one year. So it's like 41.5 mil if you stay.

You said you started working there in 2010 but "left three years ago." So it's obvious that you didn't teach for three yrs like you said . You were there for just one year. Correct?

Maybe I'll get a free phone Yep, I can confirm the salary, not sure of the OT rate, it's not in the contract. And the housing, any idea how much rooms are? Guess my husband and I will just have to get along if we're living in a dorm.
And about the vacation, it's not in the contract either but I'll take your word for it, Either way, I'd be happy to work extra hours during vacation. |
I am sorry to say your story doesn't just add up. Look at your response above where you confirmed the 2.835/month base salary for 15 hrs of teaching. Why are you lying? What are you trying to hide? |

I worked there March 2010-Feb 2013. I can scan you proof of employment if you need it. Or call yourself and ask. That would be the best thing to do if you really need to verify my info.
I know I wrote I left three years ago. My mistake. I'm already thinking it's 2015. Classes ended in December. My contract finished in February. I started teaching in March 2010 and finished teaching in December 2012. Dec 2012 to Nov 2015 is three years. I know it's 2014, but it's the tail end and I've already got the 2015 calendar up.
As to the salary. Yeah. It was 2.835 when I started. Then we got two raises that were retroactive in 2010. Ask around.
You get severance after each year. Not when you leave. So I got my severance in February which means that base salary is 45.
I've got nothing to hide. I've PMed you a few times volunteering to answer your questions. You don't want to apply then don't. There are plenty of people who will. And for anyone who has questions feel free to ask. If you want proof of employment like ChrisPK does I would be happy to prove those as well :/

My contract finished in February. The following year. I started teaching in March 2010 and finished teaching in December 2012. My contract ran from March 2010-February 2013. It's standard for good unis to give ten weeks of vacay for each break.

I have two more questions. Can you tell me what this is?
"Doing some class-related and administrative paperwork, and counseling students." http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/index.cgi?read=62640
How many hours per week does this normally take?
And how many students are in each class? And it's 5 days of teaching per week, right?
Thanks. |

2-3 office hours per week. I can't remember. I had three but don't know if I stuck an extra one in because of my schedule.
25 was the max.
5 days. Used to be 4 before I got there.
If you're in Seoul and want to meet for coffee Id be more than happy to help out. I can bring my proof of employment as well. All kidding aside Id be happy to meet up and answer any questions you have. |

Key points which were not considered up till now.
| Quote: |
| ... obviously there's a huge amount of difference in the TYPE of grading one is responsible for and time spent outside of class...for example at sunggyunwan where they make you teach entire semester of writing classes and then another semester of "presentation" classes (I'm pretty sure SNU is similar)...there would obviously be significantly more grading time involved (essays) then just teaching some conversation 101 class with interchange or whatever..as someone who claims to have taught esl before that should have been blatantly obvious..just sayin'! |

"Contact hours" don't mean anything. |
