Writing a book is a better way to make money than to work at a University in South Korea. Congratulations on your achievement. |

I'm reminded of why I no longer frequent the forums here. I think the book could be helpful to people looking for uni jobs. If you're not interested, don't buy it. |

congrats on finishing up a book and getting it out there, first off.
most people applying to university jobs will have been in k land for at least a couple of years to begin with, so odds are the info will be repetitive. still, for a couple of bucks, why not get somebody's take on the process, especially if you're a newly minted MA and looking to get into u teaching.
but when all is said and done, it'll boil down to pedigree (degree type and level, certs, and experience), contacts, and timing. a lot of the chapters, while interesting, should send up red flags to anyone even thinking of going for a university slot. if you can't build a CV, field interview questions, and put together a demo, you should really be thinking twice about applying to begin with, and that goes quadruple for the better jobs out there.
if you're going to update it, it would be great to see input from a LOT of university teachers - the good, the bad, and the ugly. just a suggestion. then you could dissagregate levels and types of u jobs and who might best apply to what type of university and position.
hope you have success with the venture. a lot of people talk about actually writing something and getting it out there, but a very small percentage do. cheers to you. |

Checked out your blog, and I must say it is nice. Informative and provides a good list of resources. Keep up the good work. I checked out your book and the Kindle price is WAY good. People should look into getting it if you are searching for University employment. BTW, I don't know the OP, unless it was a chance meeting at one of the KOTESOL events, so I am not a friend of a friend who is recommending. I just wanted to support a good effort done by the OP. |

Thanks PR, Tob, and Gen, I appreciate your support.
The way I see it, it's the same price as a couple rolls of Gimbap so even if someone only gets 2 or 3 helpful tips (although I'm sure 99% of people would get more), it's money well spent. It's a pretty easy read (lots of sections!) and you could get through it in 2-3 hours, or even less if you just skip to the sections most applicable to you.
PR: I do break down uni jobs into 3 "Tiers" plus unigwons in the book and make suggestions for the less-qualified applicants (those with a fresh MA but no uni experience) to focus on the bottom tier uni jobs and unigwons in order to get their 2 years experience so they can move up in the world. |

Like the Facebook page if you're searching for a uni job. I'll be posting lots of helpful stuff there, including some excerpts from my book and links to some promising looking jobs (especially those for people with only a bachelor's degree).

Well, GL I guess, but a short look over the blog with I saw this,

which is an extremely poor way of showcasing university work and probably the number one reason NETs are continually fired/not rehired. |

To save you some time, I posted about 17 links to universities currently hiring, several of which only require a BA. That was on the 'University jobs without university experience' thread. Cheers, P.R. |

You quoted me out of context. I suggest people read the entire blog post to get some idea of what I actually meant when I said that. |

Might also be helpful if it were stressed that:
1) you can indeed get canned if you're found to be working outside the university in many cases,
2) BA positions usually aren't very good, but at least they give you a bit more free time and vacations than standard hagwon jobs or private school gigs, and
3) best to get started on that MA as eventually there will be no more BA university jobs here in Korea.
Was it Groucho Marx who said, "I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member." Sums up BA university teaching positions in my experience and the experience of a LOT of friends here over the past 20 years. |

Yep....it's all covered in the book actually. The Facebook page/ My Life! Teaching in a Korean University blog are just little tasters.

Ah, I do see on the blog that you do indeed mention getting that MA. Nice.
But truth be told, the world won't be your oyster, at least not in Korea or Japan. China? Maybe. There is a LOT of competition for the better jobs with job security here, and a load of senior instructors with great degrees, tons of certs, and a lot of related experience (IELTS/CELTA&DELTA trainers/regular journal article producers and conference participation).
These are the people that are offered any job to which they apply, and they aren't going anywhere once they settle into a higher paying job with no term limits. Well, unless the rug gets pulled out from under them. THAT has happened.
But, hey, you have to start somewhere! |
