Can we make this a sticky?

Dudes in Korea would want to make this a sticky to limit competition for their jobs.

They are probably posting while getting 3 million won a month for 12 class a week.

All the while breathing clean air and eating safe food.

Don't listen to them. There is infinite opportunity in Korea and you will bank a ton of money.

Trust me, half those CL jobs have been posted for months!
Nobody wants them.
But yeah, there are openings. You just have to accept less in return, or be patient.

Well if you are talking about quality, that is a different story entirely. But this guy said "very few jobs" so I thought we were talking about quantity.

Depending on how long you have been unemployed, those "shite" jobs may start to look better and better (as long as they pay). I have always found it a bit strange when those with better jobs here tell others not to settle for less, which seems a bit unsympathetic to their circumstances.

Well yea, if you're desparate, 2.1 for 10 hrs a day might start to look okay. I understand. But if you accept that, the job you always wanted will call you the next day haha.
About the infitinte jobs and ton of money, thats a bit of an exaggeration eh? HAha damn

All I am looking for is a decent private school/Hagwons job that starts in 2015 in Seoul which provides accomodation.
I have literally been searching and sending resumes and interviewing with recruiters since October (so it's been just over a month now) and I am getting impatient.

I know Seoul is competitive but why am I only getting job offers from gyeonggido or part time places with no accommodation? I thought Seoul was supposed to have Hagwons stacked on top of each other?

I am going to talk to you quite bluntly. Bear in mind I think this is a pretty f'd up system but it is the way they run the show here. Also keep in mind that this is from my 4+ years experience here and I welcome any corrections on these perceptions.

First, the things that no one can control:
Being a caucasian from North America is HUGE. Sad but true. Also an attractive female is a huge plus. Generally, any person regarded as "good looking" will have a distinct advantage. Appearances play a disproportionately important role in everything here. Age is important also. Younger applicants could be seen as being more energetic, more willing to do as they're told, and less likely to question practices that they don't agree with. I have actually overheard former head teachers and managers saying that they prefer younger people with no teaching experience because it makes the instructors more malleable to the school's own individual system. Also, they can pay you a lot less. Of course, there may be just as many schools who think this is utter nonsense (which I think it is).

Second, the things you can control:
Super bubbly, Peewee Herman types really wow potential employers. They know they can make a lot of money off of you if they think you are a person that children will enjoy being with every day. So if you are too cool for that, fake it. Be a clown. If you don't feel like a jackass during a job interview, maybe you are doing something wrong. Any skills that you have, such as singing, dancing, playing an instrument or art will go a long way if they can be put to relevant use for the position, so let them be known and find a way to show them off. Also, having a really nice resume photo can go a long way. Strongly consider paying for photos to be taken professionally, and wear a suit, tie and blazer.

I found my 1st job in Seoul because I had some of the things I mentioned first. It was a pretty rough job. I have found better and better jobs by taking advantage of the things I mentioned second. I hope this helps!

Look, I'm not trying to ruin your day OP. Many of us here in Korea have been here for awhile and do ok because we got in when the getting is good. But starting here now is a huge step down. Wages the same as years ago, much lower exchange rate, higher cost of living, many public school teachers will be cut next year (2015) creating even more competition for already bad jobs, many hakwons also no longer paying the return flight.

Come over if you want, but you won't save as much as you think. Many of the rumours and stories you heard about cash here and girls loving you, etc are from years ago. The local economy is shiite here too.

China is the next booming thing. Many places there are either giving a free apartment or paying a much higher salary and letting you choose your own. The cost of living is quite cheap and you can save a lot. If you can snag entry level at 12,000 RMB with a free apartment, you'll earn slightly more than a free apartment earning 2.1 million won here. Plus the living cost is much cheaper allowing for a much higher savings. With experience, you can make more than this or take a pay cut and go to a smaller city university and work low hours also with a free place to stay.

You take risks there, you take risks here. Skimp by here or live better there. Your choice.

Management has also become more tyrannical now, emboldened by the glut of applicants.

You could spend months applying and getting documents/ visas in order, only to find you get fired within the first few months on the bosses whim- because he knows he can have the pick of 100 other people within a day if he wants.

It used to be that you only had to threaten to quit and the boss would do whatever you asked because it was almost impossible to replace you. Now the situation is reversed.
