I think what can be gotten from this is that a majority of people from any country, except those who are from oppressive regimes (and sometimes, even them), feel like they are better than people from other countries. Leaders use this to improve their individual circumstances. Besides prostitution, being a leader is the oldest profession in the world. Their positions are not dissimilar. |
What are you doing?

I apologize for that post. I had terrible indigestion. |

Nothing to apologize for.
I thought it was brilliant. Really.
Sorry to hear about the indigestion.
It seems to bring out the best in you.
Just a tad worried that that kind of thinking makes me realize that I have to do more thinking.
Keep up the good work. |

Had an phone conversation in Japan about a job at a high school.
It was in Japanese. I needed to know the address of the school and the process in applying.
Later I heard that while my Japanese was good, I need to be more friendly on the phone.
Sometimes it seems that in Japan, it does not matter what you do, but someone will find some reason to judge you negatively.
I feel that I am just second class here and think I have to act like a woman is supposed to act. Remember that Japanese men are dominant and we must defer to them.
I have to put on a mask and fake my real emotions and just act like some happy go lucky surfer dude.
Living in Japan is like wearing an emotional straightjacket. |

Yeah, that makes sense.
Everything almost seemed a bit too controlled at times, where they bottle up emotion and keep the mask on at all costs. There would be a negative side to that for sure. |

Everyone in Japan wears a uniform.
The gaijin needs to act and look like the performing, kind of dumb, ingratiating - sycophant gaijin.
Step outside of that assigned role and try to assert yourself or your ideas, even if they're good and you know what you're doing, and your contract won't be renewed. |

Sounds like Korea as well in that you don't want to rock the boat too much, but yes, it felt like that at the university I visited there: everything seemed very controlled.
But it also had a more professional look and feel to it, and was much cleaner than any Korean university I've been in, which includes SNU. And in contrast to most places in Korea, it was very quiet. Seemed like a place of learning, instead of a zoo. The employees seemed pretty happy, but at the same it time all felt like a big fake show. |

And of course feel they are better than the Koreans and Chinese.

If you've ever been to breakfast buffets in decent Japanese hotels, you can see why. Nobody pushing and shoving and spilling, or filling their plates to the absolute maximum or shoving the food into their faces as loudly and quickly as possible or leaving food and trash everywhere. No stealing food or packing it to go. No comparison: manners-wise, the Japanese rule. We were struck by the sheer contrast between them and Koreans or Chinese we've seen on vacations.
Does that make them better? No |
Mix, I don't understand why you'd conclude "no". Shouldn't the conclusion be "yes?" |

Haha. One could certainly make that argument.
I was basically being PC by trying to state that having better manners and etiquette does not automatically make them better as people (although it certainly doesn't hurt). But it certainly makes them easier to be around, I'll say that much. |
