One tip I will point out:
The old LOR thing is dead.
I've offered them a few times, and the HR person just says yes yes great, What's the phone #?? They want to call, not just see an LOR.
That said, you can always just give them a friends # |

Still, the concept of trust here does not match up with notions back in the west. Your employer found out you're looking for another job, and that, in their eyes, means you're dog meat. I didnt. I put the name of the institution on my resume and wrote "references available if needed". I really would like my resume to reflect my experience.... a 3 year gap certainly wouldnt help me. My supervisor who I trust to give a good reference is who I was planning to use. |
You never put a "reference available if needed" statement on your resume.
If the employer wants to take it further he will ask about your references at a later date. |

I'm in a similar situation. I worked for a little over 2 years at a hagwon. It was a decent place. There was a few times that tension arose with me and fellow coworkers. We got a couple of nut jobs during the second year of my employment with the school. Nothing severe though.
Anyway, when I left my head teacher (middle school), head teacher (elementary) and director all wrote me wonderful reference letters. They were all really nice.
That was 11 months ago. In March, I was thinking about going back to the school for another year. Don't ask me why. I guess I was desperate. I first emailed the director and told me that she would have to start me at 2.1 I said fine, but she never responded back to me. Two months later I had to call the school because I needed my bank account number for the IRS. I asked again if they had any openings, and the director told me that she would think about it. She never got back to me. In August, I looked at a FB page from an old coworker and I noticed all new young teachers.
I was told today that they didn't want me back, and that they were keeping me as a backup just incase something went wrong with a new teacher. Maybe it was my age? I turned 45 last month. Maybe it was something I said? There was a little drama at school, but nothing severe.
Now, when I was on the phone with her during our last conversation I told my director that I am using the reference letters that she had given me before I left. She told me that she wouldn't say anything bad about me to another employer.
Should I take her word?
BTW, I'm a certified special education teacher from America. I'm actually in Thailand visiting my girlfriend, and I will be flying home on Friday. |

| If you worked there for 3 years, I wouldn't worry about it. A reasonable employer/recruiter should realize that a good boss doesn't keep bad teachers around for 3 years. |
