It's a mistake to take rants seriously on the internet.
People vent. They might be truly great people, well educated, good manners, etc. IRL, but get them behind a screen and hell, everyone is susceptible. It is what it is.
Rant on, oh soldier of the internet, rant on. |
You would really hope so, because op's rant is pretty bad. Calling anyone a peasant is just wrong. |

While what she did wouldn't have bothered me all that much, I can see how it could rub others the wrong way. Yesterday I was in the middle of a department store food section, looking up to read a sign, and a kid jumps up to get my attention, shouting "hello" at me. He was being an asshat, pure and simple, and while I wanted to give him a piece of my mind, I thought better of it. Why let a punk kid get your goat? |
Exactly, it's just a kid. AND THAT KID PAYS YOUR SALARY!!!

You know, unless Smithington owns property here or back home, and especially if he is living in his paid-by-school one-room apartment, doesn't that technically make him a peasant? A Isn't that kind of like manorialism? The lord (school) provides him with a place to live in exchange for him working. And isn't he from England and thus technically a subject of the crown, without rank or title? |

This situation seems to me like a classic case of a foreigner being butt-hurt because Koreans aren't falling over themselves in awe and admiration every time he enters the room. |
Again with the stupid assumptions. |

No, behaving like a peasant is wrong. If you snort, hack, spit, shoot snot rackets, and eat your food loudly with your mouth open then unfortunately the label of 'peasant' is appropriate. Again, change the behavior and foreigners will stop referring to Koreans as "farmers in suits" (do you think I made up that phrase?), "peasants," and a lot worse. And it doesn't matter what an individual's job or social standing is. I've seen plenty of men in three piece suits emptying their nostrils on the street. The label applies to them too.
When they stop acting like peasants I'll stop making note of it, and stop referring to (so many of) them as such.
They be mightily unrefined. |

I wish people would stop talking about farmers in this way.
I know a lot of farmers back home, infact I grew up on a farm myself, and I have to say, I dont think I know a single person that hawks, spits in the street, eats like a pig at a trough or is just downright rude.
Comparing Koreans to farmers in suits is just plain wrong. |

I agree 100%. The term does not do justice to the extent of coarseness and lack of refinement exhibited by so many here. I grew up in a rural area and knew many farmers. I went to school with the children of farmers. Neither they nor their parents did any of the things we see people doing here. The "farmers in suits" analogy is quite unfair to farmers in developed countries. Hence "peasants in suits" is much more applicable, even if it sure to further arouse the ire of the apologist crowd.
There's nothing wrong with being a farmer. It is a noble profession. There's everything wrong, however, with having the manners of a peasant.
I for one resolve to stop using that particular phrase. |

Wow Tiger, that's a shitty attitude. I hate agreeing with Smith.
Smithy was hired to teach English. That is his job. He is not obligated to speak Korean at all. It is good if he does but not necessary.
안녕하세요 is about all I'd give the lady. Not that I have anything against her, I just think we would have nothing in common at all.

Its hard to find an apt analogy.
They behave to some extent like commoners from the Victorian era. But even street urchins had a sense of chivalry. |

It's exactly what makes Korea so frustrating at times. I give them full credit for what they've accomplished since 1950. They have every right to be proud of their achievements. Economically they've come a great distance, and become a liberal democracy to boot. That's nothing to shake a stick at.
But they've only got one foot in the 21st century - the other is dragging way behind in some earlier century. Culturally, and especially in respect to manners, they fall well behind their economic and political accomplishments. It's this contradiction that is so grating. They can compete with the high technology of other developed, yet you'd never want to invite them to dinner.
They need to decide which century they wish to live in, and then embrace it whole-heartly. Seventeen or twenty-first? Make a decision and stick to it.
Until that time Korean culture will truly remain "unique".

And she was hired to clean the school. She's not obligated to be kind, respectful and polite to him. It's good if she does but not necessary.
At the end of the day, you can 'give' her as much as you want. And she too can 'give' you back as much as she wants. But I am firm believer in the idea that how one is perceived by others has a massive impact on how one is then treated by others.

Not exactly a profound observation, is it now? |
