Good on Seoul! The Cheongyechon project was a huge success, and I expect this will be too. If only more North American cities had the guts to do what they're doing. |

Good idea to tell people to drive less. If someone wants to sit in traffic for 2 hours and burn $50 worth of gas when they could have taken the subway and paid $1.50 and taken half the time, good on them. |

The subway ain't all that fast and traffic ain't always that bad.
Plus you can sit comfortably in your car in a climate you control and if you need to carry large packages the car has obvious advantages.
I don't drive, just that the Seoul subway (and let's not forget the buses) ain't the end-all and be-all many make it out to be. |

What North American cities don't have lots of green space? NYC sure does; the highline is what Korea has been benchmarking lately. |

In my experience here, the overpasses only contribute to what I consider the worst aspect of driving in Seoul...the incessant lane changing. The removal of the overpasses in other areas of the city seem to have really cleaned things up. |

If I lived in Seoul, I also wouldn't need to drive. The subway and bus transfers seem pretty efficient. But, out here in the provinces in the regional cities, buses not always that efficient with strange routes. (I think they stick to them same routes as 20 or 30 years ago ignoring the growth since then or something. Resistence to change.) I could spend over an hour by busses transfering to get to work in the morning or drive and get there in 22 minutes.
My regional city is a miniturized version of Seoul. Inadequate infrastructure and too many cars, though without these type of over passes which I wish they had. Some intersections are slow moving with red lights taking too long to change. It has taken me nearly two years to get use to driving here without blowing a gasket. |

4 major reasons I do not drive here
1. Cost of gas is really high.
2. Parking is a nightmare.
3. Like the person before me, I would blow my stack everytime I drive.
4. Inane traffic laws regarding accident fault and pedestrians.
The subway avoids all of these, as annoying as it can be at times.

Not so bad. I paid 900,000 my first year. I've driven for over 3 years, no accidents and pay 500,000 won a year now. I drive LPG and save money on fuel, plus prices are going down the last few months. (2.0 liter engine which means some power when driving.) Getting a mid range used car for 3 or 4 million won means a lack of monthly car payments and a lack of hassle over things breaking down. (IE A late 90's car bought for over a million won which btw you are being ripped off for if that's the price being asked. Foreigners selling old cars to other foreigners sometimes overprice things here.) If you do drive either have a credit card or 1 or 2 million in a savings account you can access for emergencies if an unexpected car repair pops up before pay day day. Save these funds up before buying a car if you ever are going to do this here.
Driving is mostly advantageous if here long term and living outside of Seoul or immediate area. |

Maybe it was because of my age (under 26). I was looking at getting a POS used car for 3 million won. The insurance quote from Samsung Fire was 2 million won/year.
Plus I live in Bundang and commute into Yangjae, and traffic on the Gyeongbu Expressway is hell on earth. |

2 million?!?!
I pay like 650,000 for my 4 million won decent but getting a bit long in the tooth car. I think they're trying to milk you for collision, which you don't need for a cheap car like that. Try Chartis. 24 hour English roadside assistance. Something NONE of the other companies can offer. Or Educar if you are a public school teacher.
The great thing here is that Koreans think 100,000km is over-the-hill for a car, the way 100,000 miles is thought of in the States. But 100,000km is only like 60,000 miles or so. Maintenance can be cheap on basics, but as Weigookin74 said, keep some money stashed if you have to make repairs.
Having a car really helps if you're buying groceries. But parking IS a nightmare as Cave Dweller said. |

Guys you all are getting raped.... seriously. There are better rates out there.
I am paying 500,000 a year on a 3 year old car with 50k on it. Fully covered.
When it was new I paid 700,000 a year. Domestic car. |

This is particularly funny considering that I have a 200,000 mile lifetime warranty on the Hyundae Elantra (Avante) that I bought in the States.
It's also worth noting that Korean immigrants to the States have a tendency to buy older high mileage luxury imports. Interesting contrast. |
