|
|
I have a seven-year-old student who has no friends in school. On top of that, one girl has taken to bullying her (making fun of her when she doesn't know how to spell something in English, saying she's jealous of everyone, saying no one wants to be her friend, etc.). Her mom finally complained that the girl was coming home in tears and saying she had no friends, but I really have no idea what to do. My co-teacher spoke to both girls individually, but to no avail.
I've begun to closely help the girl and then ask her to help other students (with my help she finishes way faster than everyone else), but I think eventually kids will start to pick up on that... not to mention they already call her my daughter.
Tips? |

The old fashioned way is to buy the kid a football. |

This sounds like the beginning of Smithington's autobiography!
Quite a page turner! |

OP, I have a similar situation at my school. There's one girl in grade 6 who no-one talks to ever. Not in class, not in the hallway and not in the lunchroom. They treat her like she is invisible. You'd think the occasional student would reach out to her but not one. I've been at this school 18 months and have never seen anyone even acknowledge that she exists. (To be onest I haven't even seen a teacher speak to her.)
When I see her I always try to smile and say hello, but it's like she's afraid of her own shadow. Her English skills are zero and she can't do any of the worsksheets I hand out to the class. She also has darker skin than the other children, so I wonder if that is part of the problem. I wonder if one of her parents is non-Korean, hence the ostacization. I would hope not, because I really like my students and would hate to think they thought like that. Unfortunately, there is very little we can do other than show them kindness. But even here if we show them too much consideration the other students might laugh at her for that, too. Unless you're fluent in Korean there's not a great deal you can do. I've pointed this girl's situation out to a couple of Korean teachers before and they just sigh and say "I know" and nothing changes.
Anyway, good on you OP for trying to do something. Childhood should be the happiest part of one's life. And you only get one chance at it. |

It's like bullying, it's pretty limited what a teacher can do other than try to put the kid in positions that benefit the kid. After that's it's all up to the social order of things where things will fall, and the onus is on the kid to act on it (with a little nudge of course). |

I'm not even trolling you now Smithington.
Why the fu*k do you keep giving her worksheets she can't access? ('can't do' in layman's terms!)
Stop being lazy and differentiate your worksheets, people like you shouldn't be allowed in a classroom.

I'm sure she feels really happy every time you plonk a worksheet in front of her that she cannot do/understand. At least you can use your Korean skills to explain it to her...... |

You stupid troll. Nowhere did I say I didn't prepare easier worksheets for her. But even those she has great difficulty with. She obviously has special needs that require special attention. The thread, moreover, is about helping a child find friends. She seems to have none and, as a conscientious individual, it has caused me concern. Your only concern is to use a thread about a sad child and use it for trolling a poster who called you out for some disgusting posts (of a perverse sexual nature about children and vulnerable women). I encourage readers to search Lucas' posting history. It's vile. It's just more evidence that you aren't a teacher at all. All evidence points to the fact that you are a teenager trolling this site. Maybe your parents are teachers. Most likely you are at an international high school here. I doubt very much you are out of your teens. If you are, and you are actually an adult with a university degree, I find that very sad. Not only do your posts give off a 'creep' vibe, but a powerfully immature vibe also. (It would be best if you just admitted to being a teenager.)
Anyone can look at your posting history. You start threads almost every day of the most immature content. Most of your posts don't even get a single reply. Why is that? Because they are of such content that no-one out of their teens finds that stuff the slightest bit interesting. It's junior high school stuff. You also never post anything in the 'job discussion' forum about your job, about teaching, or about your school. Why is that? It's most likely because you're not a teacher at all. Even here in this thread you had an opportunity, as a supposed teacher, to offer some advice to the OP about helping an unhappy child. Rather than doing that, as would be the normal response from an adult and a teacher, you hijack yet another thread to troll. Again, it's best if you just admit to being a teenager.
Because if you are a teenager, I guess we can cut you some slack. Immaturity, trolling, and youth seem to come as a package. But if you are indeed a university graduate and a teacher I find that incredibly sad. And more than a bit creepy. No-one with your posting history should be anywhere near children. And no-one as profoundly immature as yourself should be in any way affiliated with education. Either way, grow up and stop trolling. If you have no advice that can help the OP with her situation then move on. There are people here who would like to help her make a difference in the daily of life of the student in question. If you have nothing to offer at least have the decency to be quiet.
OP, I hope you have some success the situation you described. |

Are you guys friends in real life or something and are just messing with one another and having a laugh about it? If not, you guys legit hate each other!
From the posts I've read it looks like Lucas attacks everything Smithington says no matter what he's talking about.
Did I miss something awhile back? Why do you two want to murder each other? |

Hate is a strong word.
It's more like that kimchi smell when you open a Koreans fridge. It makes you gag a little, but harmless enough.
Every time I read one of Smithington's posts, I wrench a little bit.

This is exactly what I mean by Lucas' maturity level. This is the basic level of every single post he makes. It's a post one expects from a 17 year old kid. One never detects any hint of a formed adult personality. Do a search of his posting record and see for yourself. Also scroll through the jobs discussion section and see if there is a single post where he discusses his job, his school, or any details of his work day. Opta.
And yes, he trolls me from one post to another. It's a bit creepy to be honest. Whatever the topic I'm addressing he turns it into a trolling session. This again speaks to his maturity level. Hopefully the mods will soon tire of it. |
