What are you going on about with the "dark times" of Korea? If 24 years brought you into the present, then you've worked through some pretty good times, too. 1.2 mil isn't even one year's worth of pension. So there are schools during the pleasant sparkling times that didn't pay you either.

This is why I think OP is either trolling, lying, or he's going to get 1.2 million/month in pension payments, which would make sense after more than two decades in country, what with the ten year cutoff (not 1.2 million as a lump sum). |

Right. Clearly by the English you're using you're a gyopo (or some other non-native speaker...not that there's anything wrong with that) and seems likely you've worked here under the table without a degree and/or as an independent contractor. Either way, no pension for that kind of work.
Even if I'm wrong, pension is a small part of what you can have saved up in a given year. Over 24 years, even less. |
Or he's just drunk. |

I don't understand how you could work in Korea for 24 years without ever having a legit job. |

Sorry to hear that man.
Have you considered hiring legal aid? Maybe they can get at least some of the schools you worked for to pay up. |

Depends on the country you are from. Canadians have a 10 year cut off point on lump sum withdrawls. I think the U.S. doesn't. |
Are you sure about that? When I read it I panicked and called the pension office because I'm at the 10 year mark now. They say it doesn't matter if you've been paying into more than 10 years. The 10 years is when you officially qualify for monthly pension payments at the retirement age. To get the refund, you just need to report it from 5 years of your date of departure from Korea.
However, I'm still uneasy even though hearing it from an official at NPS. If you have any official links saying that you don't qualify for a refund after 10 years of payment, let us know.
Thanks. |

Some of you are supportive and empathetic to the OP's situation...a very significant and alarming situation, reflecting another reason NOT to trust Korea or Koreans.
Others here, are just plain assholes. |

I've got bad news for you, Tom.
After years of talking with the pension office and trying to get pension (while getting laughed at the whole time, of course), I finally qualified in August of this year. But here's the bad news... I owe backpayments.
You might get a letter soon saying you owe 50,000,000 won in backpayments since you've been here 24 years.
Of what nationality are you, Tom? |

You qualify once you make a certain number of payments (160, I think). |

That would make sense (...and if that's the case, I'll retract the second part of my last statement).
tomtom, you sure these aren't monthly payments? You’ve been here 24 years. Don’t you have any Korean friends or acquaintances that can help you? Or…god, after that long, didn’t you learn any Korean through osmosis?
