Very new here. I've been sending out my resumes and filling out applications for recruiters and posted my resume on job boards. A recruiter called Jasmine ESL was one of the few who got back to me. Tried looking up reviews on them and found nothing, but their site seem pretty legit.

http://www.jasminesl.com/

Mister Smith from JasmineEsl was one of the only few recruiters who kept in touch with me and set up interviews for me. First was with Kidsland, and he offered CDI but with all the stories I've heard and my friends' experience there, I passed that one. Then he set up an interview for me with YBM ECC, decided to proceed and few days later I found out I was hired. But my point of this post is, Mister Smith said he'll arrange the flight ticket for me, is that normal? Usually I thought the teacher buys his/her flight ticket themselves and get reimburse by the employer after a month of teaching. No?

Public school you buy your own ticket. Hagwons pay for you. Judging by this post though, have you seen a contract? It should have said in the contract that the school provides you with a ticket. Make sure you get return airfare as well.

Are you being offered public school positions by your recruiter? If so you might want to consider those, or switch to a recruiter that does offer you public school positions. You seem pretty naïve.

Ecc is gonna chew u up amd spit u out haha.
8-10 classes a day sometimes, probably Wednesday.
Lot of "events" and sit down meetings.
Calculated hourly, its like minimum wage at Ecc.
That's why they hire young.

But you will have several other FTs, which is nice. Ready-made friends.

To the OP, yes, the school will pay for your flight. They should also offer you a return ticket when you finish. Some also offer the choice of a ticket or money when you finish. That's a good option in case you decide to stick around after a year.

Regarding public schools vs. hogwons... That's all a matter of personal choice. Personally, I would not want to work at a public school full time. I don't like the atmosphere, the co-teachers, the mixed level classes, lack of career choices in general. Sure there's probably a bit more job security for noobs and for teachers with little teaching ability but if you're not in that boat then the private industry has a lot more opportunities.

Is this true going into 2015?

I am hearing China is increasingly becoming where it's at.

I don't know what the negotiating power of a noob so maybe things are more dire for them. For someone with even a few years of experience, you can definitely find a job that offer return airfare. They probably won't offer you a return ticket up front but the return flight should be in the contract.

The problem is with the recruiters. They know that if they tell the school owner some BS like, "You know, you don't have to offer return airfare? You could offer a one way flight and you'll still get plenty of good teachers applying for the job. At my agency we have dozens of applications every day. The job market in America is dismal and many teachers are out of work. If you use MY agency, I'll save you a the cost of a plane ticket. What do you say? That's more money in your pocket. Wouldn't you like to have more money in your pocket? (By the way, my finders fee will be 1.5 million.)" And the schools fall for it. If enough people stop accepting these crappy offers we'll all benefit. It's like part-time teachers who are willing to work for 20k/hr.
