I taught English in Seoul for a year and the school didnt like it because they want you to stay 2-3 years. I got ripped off the first time by losing my bonus
But the second time when I taught in for a year I got paid in full. On the second last day teaching I sat in the bank and had a quiet sit-in. I phoned my boss at the hagwan and told him where I was and the bonus appeared in my bank account within a few minutes.
The school doesnt want to cause a problem with the bank so they pay up I guess.
You can't protest much in SK but that was an effective way for me to get all the money I was owed. Otherwise in SK it was an awesome experience. |

Random? Whatever. It worked. Got the money owed as stated in the contract. In South Korea.
Affecting relationships creates leverage. May disrupt harmony in the nation. |

Please explain further. You went to a bank and told the bank manager that you would sit quietly in his bank until your boss paid you? |

Its wierd how touchy Korean businesses are when it comes to banks.
Two schools I worked for stressed how "important" their relationship with the bank was. Like the bank was some sensitive soul who could be offended at any moment. |

Realizing this is the key to succeeding, here. With anybody. |

I just sat in the bank waiting to be paid. The hogwan manager did not have my money in my bank account. So I phoned him and said I was sitting in the bank lobby. This is an unusual sight in SK in general I suppose.
I never had any contact with the bank manager at all. I was sitting on those square plastic seats and just waiting. My hogwan boss phoned me back quickly and said the money was ready, in my bank account, which I withdrew and closed my account there.
Next day or so I got on a plane and left SK.
The idea was I wouldnt leave the bank until I was paid all the money owed me. Koreans are very polite and so was I. |
