South Korea's parliament has approved an 80% hike in the price of cigarettes, a move aimed at curbing consumption.
A rise from 2,500 won ($2.25; £1.43) per pack to 4,500 won from 1 January was part of the 2015 budget adopted late on Tuesday. |
I can see the mad stampede for the 2,500 packs now.
Why not bulk buy now? |

I was told when this was first brought up that shops started putting a 2 carton limit of cigarette purchases to stop a mad rush on bulk buying. |

Coworker told me that it's just one carton, and if you are caught buying cigs in bulk you will be fined 50 million won or something insane. |

I'm not a smoker, so I don't know about the shelf life of cigarettes. If you do buy them in bulk, how long would the things last before they're not worth smoking? |

In the original wrapping and in the freezer, maybe six months? |

Many shops near me won't even sell a carton of ten packs now, limiting sales to 3-4 packets.
I wonder if they are trying to hold on to their stock bought at the current wholesale price, as that's a nice extra profit for the seller when the price hike kicks off. |

All advertising will be banned in convenience stores. Warning photos such as rotten teeth and lungs will be mandatory on packaging. So, if I am to assume correctly, all the unsold stock they have at the end of the year will be returned or destroyed. No use in hoarding cigarettes for extra profit.
Lets see if we can get a "fat" tax passed now. |

This move's aimed at collecting taxes. The Park administration couldn't care less about the people of this country.
I don't even smoke and even I'm against this tax hike. I just don't trust this corrupt and incompetent government to spend the the money on anything besides lining their pockets. |

Fake cig's coming over from China and NK, flooding the K market.
I'm sure Korea's blisteringly efficient officials will deal with this..... |

Of course it is aimed at collecting taxes, it's a common goal among all governments.
I'm a smoker and think they should have raised the prices to around 10,000-won, that's when I 'stopped' smoking in Canada. |

It's aimed SOLELY at collecting taxes and that's what I find disgusting about this administration.
Politicians get to be either corrupt or incompetent. Not both. This administration is both. |
