A Korean Air executive is under investigation over claims she delayed a plane over the way she was served nuts.
Heather Cho demanded the removal of a crew member from a flight last Friday for failing to serve nuts on a plate.
Ms Cho, a vice-president of the firm, forced the Incheon-bound flight to taxi back to the terminal in New York.
The airline said checking service standards was part of her job, and she had the pilot's backing. But officials said she was a passenger at the time.
Local media reports said that a junior attendant had offered Ms Cho macadamia nuts in a bag, instead of serving the nuts on a plate.
Ms Cho, daughter of company boss Cho Yang-ho, then questioned the chief flight attendant over in-flight service standards and ordered him off the plane.
Korean Air said the plane arrived 11 minutes late, and that the decision to expel the senior flight attendant had been made in consultation with the pilot.
The airline told Korea Times that checking of quality of service was one of Ms Cho's jobs, as she is in charge of in-flight service for the carrier.
The transport authorities are investigating whether Ms Cho's actions infringed aviation law.
"Even though she is senior vice president at the company, she was a passenger at that time, so she had to behave and be treated as a passenger," a South Korea transport ministry official told reporters. |

OCD. It's the key to success. What really shocks me is that the number one key priority of an airline company is getting people where they want to go in a safely and timely manner when, in reality, it should be focused on how the food is presented. |

This says it all. Spoiled and entitled, plus maybe a bad day in the menstral cycle.
If she really wants nuts on a plate, maybe the male flight attendant should have obliged: "How 'bout deez nuts, beeyotch?"
I hope she pays some kind of fine for making everyone late.
It's not just one plane: possibly other planes had to wait for this stupid delay. If she wanted the guy fired over how he handled nuts, fine, but don't make everyone else pay for it. |

Obviously, she is NOT a professional manager. She has no skills and no training...abuse of authority...and the pilot is just has bad! No balls to stand up to her...what...turning around a plane because some VP is having a melt down? I suppose the pilot didn't want to lose his job?
No manager....for that matter, no one, should belittle, scold, etc. someone in front of others. Do it in private. This Cho is a classic example of spoiled little rich kid who gets her way.
She went to Hawaii last year to give birth to her twins in order to have U.S. citizenship...so much for having faith in korea/koreans! She doesn't care for koreans except for the money!
I wish immigration would ban her from the country for her actions. But...money talks.... |

I've been reading the comments left on some of the international news sites about this story, and most of the postings are calling for Ms Cho's head. It'll be interesting to see the response from the airline. |

I, for one, believe that Cho acted responsibly as the VP of Korean Air catering.
I would not want to be on a flight where nuts were not served on a plate. This is just common sense. Cho had every right to stop the flight and demand that the plane go back to the terminal. |

Did they have another flight attendant standing by at the airport to replace the guy kicked off the plane? Or was there now no-one to serve nuts to passengers at all? Was the workload now thrown onto the shoulders of the other flight attendants, including serving the meals and responding to bells?
I'd also guess that over-worked (and possibly resentful) employees are going to result in more complaints than having to eat one's cashews out of a bag.
Hopefully she will be reprimanded by some aviation authority (the pilot, too). Her behavior was outrageous. Hopefully the dude's union takes a stand over this. Everything else aside, he was now stranded in a foreign country. Was a seat made available to him on the next flight so he could get home? Has anyone else in the history of the airline complained that their nuts weren't served on a plate? Wouldn't nuts roll off a plate?
Nobody needs or desires to have nuts served on a plate. People need planes to get them where they're going safely and on time. The lady was wrong on a whole lot of levels. She's got her priorities up her arse. And caused a headache for the flight control staff at the airport. Surely she can't just behave like that without some consequence.
And don't get me started on Korean pilots and stupid decisions. (Any other pilot on any other airline would have toild her to sit down and shut up.) |

It's time for Steelrails to jump in and show us where a westerner in New York returned his hotdog because the waiter forgot to put mustard on it. |

I wouldn't be too sure about that. But in any other western airline I highly doubt the daughter of the parent groups CEO would be anywhere in a position of power for it to be an issue.
The thing is, if the pilot ignored her request, the flight would have gone on as usual. But once in Seoul, he probably would have been fired on the spot. No news to report, and easily covered up. But by delaying the flight, it's almost guaranteed somebody, somewhere would leak this to the media. Considering it's a mere upload, phone call, email, away before the media gets a hold of something like this.
I suspect the pilot didn't want to to lose his job, and also at the same time just knew some blow-back would happen if he just went along with the prissy request. Luckily for the pilot, this CEO's daughter VP wasn't too smart about the possible PR consequences. She could have held her peace and waited until the end of the flight to fire the steward and the pilot if she so desired with little attention.
Also, just image for a moment that say the daughter of say Air Canada's CEO was VP of something-in-flight management and on a flight. And she demanded a steward get tossed off the flight. A lot of western pilots probably would have done the same thing.
I do hope they throw the book at Korean Air and that elitist VP. She just smacks of the nose-in-the-air attitude of the whole lot of the so-called chaebol "princes/princesses". They really need to come back down to earth and start treating normal people normally. |

Will the flight attendant claim, "but the sun was in my eyes," similar to the Asiana goof. |

jv, I agreed with you at first. But on second thought, I don't think a pilot on Air Canada would make such a silly decision. More confucian mentality on this current mishap.
