The incident will likely add to public worries since below the aquarium lies the Seokchon transformer substation, so the rupturing of a tank could cause a massive disaster.

I saw this on the news last night - they had an interview with an anonymous worker (with the squeaky voice over).

They said the company that made the aquarium said they shouldn't build it over the substation, but the experts were told it would be okay by lotte.

Let's hope they're right Exclamation

Samsung Construction built it. This is the second problem so far with that building. Ever wonder how they were able to put it up so quickly?

Anyone concerned with personal safety would do well to steer clear of this building.

The government has brought in independent international inspectors. So maybe the building is barely safe, but not in the best condition. Personally I think it would be a PR boon if Lotte said, "Ok we've screwed up, so we're going to tear down the building and rebuild it to safer specs."

But I doubt that will happen.

Also, I hope the Korean media keeps on plugging away at this story to see if there are questionable contractors, and deals made at the expense of safety.

If it has a leak...plugging it won't help; the integrity of the structure has been compromised....let's just hope that it does not burst when thousands of visitors are inside...

Who built it?

Quote:

Reynolds Polymer Technology, which built the aquarium, said cracks and leaks are frequently found in new aquariums and repaired.

I was referring to the building as a whole.

Maybe just slipshod reporting, but I'd feel better about that quote if an actual person was named.

Were there leaks in the aquariums Reynolds installed in Ilsan, Jeju and Chengdu? Could it be that the building caused the problem, maybe by shifting or settling?

Just askin'.

As for the international inspectors, I get the distinct impression the government just wants people to keep visiting and spending at Lotte World and that safety is way down on the priority list.

Hmmm... when I think about it, maybe the building should collapse, to give the government an even bigger wake-up call. Nothing better than looking bad in the eyes of the world with a modern building collapsing within months of finishing construction, to really shake things up.

Kudos for Korea coming this far, but it needs to go further in safety. Koreans have a tendency to leave things as is until they are forced to act. They need a so-called 'catalyst' to change.

Just wait until the line 9 subway is extended and they have trains rolling underneath there. The extra vibration of a 100 ton train will shake the piss out of it.

I forsee terrible things. This mall was built shoddily with little thought other than money. I do not hope for it to go down, but if it does, I hope I am as far away from here as possible when that shit storm goes down.

This mall going down or becoming condemned will not change anything. Did Sewol change anything?

Sewol was one thing, but not really big enough.

Anyways, the few high profile collapse of various structures in the 90's did boost safety standards from 3rd-world standards (take money don't inspect). At least now, the actually make a half-arsed effort to inspect things. So I'd figure another high-profile 'incident' would up the safety to a slightly higher level.

Don't expect leaps, only little micro-steps of change.

I think the problem lies not in Korea's ability to build things but on the lack of apparent oversight by more senior workers/management to ensure that it's being built to code and recognized safety regulations.
