The average salary of a Plumber is $53,820.
EFL is a low paying field (even for those with PhDs and publications). |

I'm assuming that's for cities like NY or San Francisco where 50,000 is the equivalent of 20,000. |

Also that 50k goes to about 40 after federal, FICA, state and CITY taxes. |

| Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming have 0% percent tax on both social security and pension. Would a person living overseas (from elsewhere) be taxed on it? |

Very few people making enough here to feel proud of. Maybe a few hagwon owners or SAT prep teachers in daechi. Even then, iffy.
Funny story: when I went back to the states for a week, I told people I was teaching English in Korea and they always asked the same question next---"so do you have a job there??" Hahah, not only is it a relatively low paying job, very few people even consider it a job at all!!!! Don't kid yourself, nobody back home thinks you are special being a visiting prof at yoosuck university. Sure, we pay low taxes and if you are frugal, you can get by decently. But anyone bragging needs some perspective. |

I make 2.3 and I can save more on it than I could on $50,000 in the southeastern USA. 3.9 would probably be like $80,000. |

How much would be saved in the U.S.? It's hard to say. For one, money would be paid into one's social security account (so that's $7,000+ annually). Most professional jobs pay into pension. What size house would you be living in in America? (That can greatly impact the amount it is possible to save.) |

As an aside, props to EZE for not exaggerating his wage. Usually on Dave's it seems that every poster on the Gen Discussion forum ends up claiming that they are either raking in 100k or driving BMWs or giving briefings to Obama or whatever.
I think this is the first time in a long while I have seen someone not hesitate to say they make the standard rate.

My UK brother in law had a similar reaction when I told hm what I did. Until he found out later that I'd bought my house over there without a mortgage and he suddenly started showing an interest. |
