I lived in Korea for ten years, and loved it there. The country, the people, and some times the food. I went home for one year. I decided to come to China. I am on my third contract with a university. Currently we have two or three job openings for next semester.
Let me tell u about this job. My worst day here has been (almost) better then my best teaching day in Korea.
The students are great (for the most part). The boss has great English, and the foreign teachers are treated well. Starting salary is a little over 1000 dollars a month, but we do not work more then 14 hours a week. There are so many opportunities for private work, we can't keep up with it. I work 12 hours a week and do 15 hours privates for a total of 27 hours a week, and double my salary. We get 4 months of paid holiday, and 100 % airfare round trip home, whether we use it or not. Apartments are pretty good, with of course things break and no one fixes them, but fine enough.
The downside is we live in an area that is pretty boring. But, with four months paid vacation who cares. So, if anyone is interested please contact me and I will give you my bosses email address. I am not a recruiter. Just a teacher who wants to help anyone get a really good job. |

2,000 dollars a month for 27 contact hours a week. You're not selling it to me very well so far. Your figures also suggest that privates pay under 17 dollars an hour, which is awful. |

Reminds me of the Woody Allen part in "What's New, Pussycat?"
Michael: Did you get a job?
Victor: Yes, I got something at the strip-tease. I help the girls dress and undress.
Michael: Nice job.
Victor: Twenty francs a week.
Michael: Not very much.
Victor: It's all I could afford. |

work 27 hours a week
4 months vacation
bad day teaching in China better than good day in Korea
send home 1,000 dollars a month
live well on a 1,000 dollars a month
better than
8 days vacation in Korea
crappy teaching conditions
send home 500 dollars a month
live okay on 1,500 dollars a month
China is now. China is the future for the ESL industry. |

Well if you're reducing every option in TEFL down to China V a crappy Korean hagwan, China might come out better, yes. |

Coming from an American that seems somewhat hypocritical.

There are a bunch of factors in where to go but the OP seems to have a good situation. China isn't bad, depending on various factors, location, job, etc. Can have an OK life there with a bit of a social life, enough cash to save some, etc. |

Yes, yes, OP. We're aware of China. Some have made the transition over there and stayed. Some came running back.
Quick question, though....How about that air?
