wt, note that as i told plain meaning, it's not my job to do your homework for you. there are vast amounts of information showing that the world is growing at an unsustainable rate and that it's already unsustainable in a traditional agricultural model right now.
if you want more information, you need to find it on your own. it's out there though. |

Totally. I mean, they could end up like you. |

i didn't even have any arguments with you isitts, you are showing your true colors though. take your anger out on a book or some news articles to help you learn a bit more.

Wait. First you say I'm a lad, now I'm a parent? How old can I be and still be called a lad? And how can I be called a parent if I have no children?

And you should try to take deep breaths so you don't hyperventilate. That brain of yours needs oxygen. |
well your thinking and comebacks are much like a child's. you are all full of denial and believe that your actions don't have consequences, so it's easy to mistake you for a lad. and if you really have no children i'd be surprised, but for the sake of the world you should keep it that way.
anyways if you are done with the bickering and derailing the thread i'd rather not waste anymore time with you. do your own research, the information is very much out there. as it stands scientifically, the world is already overpopulated and will become catastrophically so in the near future unless people wisen up. |

To all the parents: did you adopt your children? If not, why not? I don't want kids, but if I change my mind adoption will be the way I go. |

wt, you can link all the propaganda you want, but if you actually just do some thinking for yourself you'd see that there's a food shortage in many areas of the world and the areas that don't experience this use unsustainable farming and livestock-rearing techniques to create their food supplies. this is NOW, not even what will happen in the future.
so if you put two and two together you can deduce that the population of the world is too large to support sustainable farming and livestock-rearing techniques not to mention oil/lumber/other natural resource use, which means, the population is just too large period.
edit: i've also never even once been to infowars.com nor do i know what it is. you must have me confused with someone else.

What? “Butt-hurt”? Is that a mod edit or are you actually using that word? If the latter, who’s childish, now?

I’m flattered, but as I’ve already answered (on topic, to boot), children are too expensive for me...all the research you want me to do, notwithstanding.

Um…what do you imagine I’m doing to destroy the world? I don’t have children. I don’t have a car…hell, I haven’t even been using the bus. Instead I’ve been walking everywhere.
You sure you aren’t projecting just a little? |

But you, on the other hand, should have children. We need more people like you to teach us poor fools. You need little servants to carry your message to the four corners of the world to warn everyone of their eminent doom. |

A know-it-all comedian and an opinion piece from MarketWatch?
The thread title is “Is it too expensive to have kids?” I guess you were getting warm with the MarketWatch site as this is a monetary question. But I don’t think you’re in a good position to accuse others of derailing a thread.
You honestly think overpopulation isn’t about the only thing that’s been talked about in at least the last several decades? Or certainly since the baby boom population came into being?
And more to topic, doesn’t the fact that kids are getting too expensive kind of work in favor of your rhetoric?
Regarding the comedians opening “punch-line”, isn’t his “concern” easily debunked with one word; “contraceptives”?
And finally, what are your thoughts on reports of declining birthrates in developed countries these days? How does that play into your fear mongering? |

Excellent news. Its only backward third world countries that still have an obsessive focus on marriage and baby production.
Why are massive human populations even desirable? |

All those modern conveniences which you suggested enabled us to "live more rewarding lives than any generation before us" are at least partially a function of large populations. Larger populations bring about economies of scale, which make the otherwise unaffordable affordable. This in turn creates more room for research and development, which brings new or better products to market. Transportation, electronics, pharmaceuticals, energy, data-transfer, and anything which relies upon mass production, mass transportation, or massive infrastructure are all more affordable due to the participation of more people in the markets in question. In a depopulated world, all of these things would be much, much more expensive. Now to be fair, that would be offset by certain other things, most particularly lower land and housing prices. But lower housing prices only really benefit people who want large famililes, since a single guy like you doesn't need a large estate. And real innovation would slow down considerably, because we're to the point in many fields where incremental innovation requires massive investment. It's consumer hedonists that implicitly rely upon large populations to be happy, people who sincerely think, "We are able to live more rewarding lives than any generation before us."
Then we have the concern that "having children, even one, is disastrous for the environment." Nevermind that we live in Korea, where fertility is already far below replenishment (and in fact, among the lowest in the entire world). In fact, much of the developed world is below replenishment right now, often drastically, which means the native populations of those countries are contracting already. There's no point in heckling Westerners or East Asians for having children, they're already not having children. If that drunk comedian who fancies himself a 'bold truth teller' wants to make the case for fewer babies in an actually rational fashion, he'll have to pitch it to South America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. But he didn't do that, because doing so would result in him (unfairly) being condemned as a racist and driven out of the public eye, so instead he picks on some suburban mother, as if it's people who drive hybrid cars who are having 3+ children on average. Seems he's just as cowardly as the news he mocks for not telling people what they don't want to hear.
Then we've got the question, "Why don't you adopt?" Why don't we adopt? Because adoption, although worthy and compassionate (if one actually does it, instead of entertaining it in some counterfactual situation), is fundamentally different in character. Giving a child the gift of a family is wonderful, but how can one even compare it to giving a child the gift of existence? Beyond that, there are biological differences, genetic differences, familial differences, and even epistemological differences in the two acts. And beyond even those deficiencies, it's also far more challenging and strenuous, and not uncommonly more expensive in the bargain. People who adopt and raise their child well have done something very compassionate, but it's hardly surprising that more people don't do it when doing so would not achieve most people's objectives in the first place.
There are real environmental issues to be addressed in our world, but with regards to population in particular, the West and East Asia are already on the path to population decline. No one on this board has to worry about not having children for the sake of the environment, the trend is already at work. So why try to phrase a choice to avoid reproduction as some great sacrifice for the sake of the environment? Shimokitazawa's simple, honest admission that he doesn't want children is far more admirable than all of this feigned environmental concern from people living comfortable western lifestyles. |
