Well foreigners make up like 2% of Korea's population. Yet 63/284 are caught smuggling drugs in. A disparity in representation. Were all of those 63 visa holders? |
But international drug smuggling, by its very nature, always involves at least two countries. So the makeup of foreign smugglers and Korean smugglers should be close to 50/50. Foreigners are actually underrepresented. |

| I knew a teacher who used to smuggle hash in his intestines. He'd divide a kilo of hash into small pieces and then wrap the pieces in plastic and swallow them. After he had arrived he would poop out the hash. One trip to Nepal a year was enough to more than double his income. With his method there was an almost zero chance of being caught. People that try to smuggle drugs through the mail are just stupid. |

I knew a guy who grew his own in a closet. After a couple of months he had
2 ounces of premium sticky buds. He never sold it or smoked anyone up. He
was totally under the radar. That is the way to do it. If you buy it, then
anyone who gets busted will narc on the dealer, who, in turn, will grass
everyone he sold it to. Then you end up in jail for a few weeks, pay a
hefty fine and get deported. |

According to the numbers, most of the drugs are brought in by Koreans, but of course the title must read that the number of foreigners / language teachers bringing things in increased slightly. How about the rest of the story? If the total number of cases went up enough, then the actual percent of foreigners bringing things in could even go down relative to the overall. |

| May I ask how anybody brings in drugs in any numbers through the airport? You would have to use condoms and ingest them. In third world countries immigration is crooked and overlooks them, except for an occasional arrest of a mule to satisfy the authorities. |

Per capita, it's anyone's guess as to who is getting busted more frequently. Keep in mind, the population of Canada is millions of people less than the population of the state of California. Plus, there are 28,000 American soldiers in South Korea.
Also, remember that English teachers from Ireland, the UK, the USA, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia have to jump through hoops on account of Mr. Swirleyface, a Canadian.
To answer your question about drug smuggling, what they do doesn't bother me. I have never sold drugs or taken drugs so if someone else has that reflects entirely on them. It has nothing to do with me anymore than Mr. Swirleyface is a reflection of you or Glenn GoGo is a reflection of me. The American dope smugglers probably have a lot more in common with the Canadian dope smugglers than they have with me. And you probably have more in common with most American English teachers than you have with Canadian dope smugglers. |

The answer to all of this is quite simple-
If a Korean tells you that they've smoked weed, you're mildly surprised at least.
If an NET tells you that they've NEVER smoked weed, you're mildly surprised.
If that is our own reaction and perception, is it really strange for Koreans to be at least a little bit suspicious? |
