Here are some interesting charts; income per capita divided by debt per capita. It puts Japan #1. The USA is #2
No, man, the opposite. That's for Effective Net Worth Per Citizen, which is why the last line of the article is, "Looks like the United States is still the best place to be, even though debt is high." Why would the U.S. be the best (in this area), and not Japan? Maybe because the cost of living is much lower in America. Adjusted for PPP, the United States could come out on top.

Talking about salaries is tacky, trashy, and points to ill breeding.

The reason you don't like the question is North Dakotan oil diggers make much, much, much more than you. You're not fooling anyone but yourself when you claim this:

There should be nothing wrong with people here exchanging information or discussing salary ranges and benefits. That's what the purpose of this forum should be for.

I've never understood why some people are offended by discussion of salary.

In other words, it should be a secret. Okay, but why?

Exactly. As long as a person is giving concrete, specific numbers, they are helping a discussion (unless they are lying, in which case they are really pathetic).

If someone says what their salary is (giving numbers) and explain how they did it (and what visa type they have), then that is great and helpful information. It's good to know how much money can be made per hour in various jobs and what the benefits (as well as the drawbacks) are. That's way better than vague platitudes.

Such a discussion would not be polite in real life in person; however, we are strangers here, which is a big plus of having a dialogue online.

A year or two ago, I was looking at a Credit Suisse chart about global net worth per household. The one thing that stood out to me was that although the average household net worth in Australia and the USA were both roughly $250,000, give or take, the median household net worth in Australia was around $185,000 but it was only $38,000 in the USA. I found that shocking. Even though I'm from one of the poorest towns in one of the poorest areas of the USA, I didn't realize America was that impoverished.

I found the chart. It's not household net worth, it's net worth per adult. I was off about Australia's numbers, but it's still an eye-opener.

http://econintersect.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/z-temp3.png

The USA and Japan have comparable per capita net worth, but 32% of American adults have a net worth of less than $10,000. Only 4% of Japanese adults are that poor.

Numbers can be interpreted in a variety of ways. (And stats from 2013 and 2014 are more accurate than older ones.)

I agree that newer data is more valuable than older data, but I think median figures provide more insight about a country's standard of living than mean figures.

For a lot of Americans, they are worth nothing (or minus nothing) on paper because their debt exceeds their assets. This is not necessarily a bad thing though. Americans living in large suburban houses owe money...however...mortgages in the U.S. are tax deductible...PLUS living in a large house = a better standard of living. Houses in America are objectively bigger (more spacious) than houses in Japan. (The U.S. and Canada have the biggest homes in the world.)

What's your problem? You have even come out and asked about my job and income?

You know what's vapid?

Unsolicited bragging/put downs- "I make more money than you."- followed by no useful/specific information.

I asked for a rough ballpark figure of how much you charge per hour / per month (not because I wanted to insult you back but because I wanted to learn), but you refused to answer.

That's really obnoxious.

I guess those numbers have more to do with people being able to retire early/when they want to due to the good economy (high stock values mean their 401Ks/retirement packages/stock investments are worth a lot more than before).

If you think people are leaving the workforce because so many of them have done so well that they are able to retire early you are extremely delusional. The 2008 meltdown wiped out so many baby boomers retirement funds.

NASDAQ Composite:
October 2002: 1,210
November 2007: 2,810 (peak before the "crash")
March 2009: 1,293 (lowest point in the dip)
December 2014: 4,807 (currently)

TL;DR: It's better now than it ever was. (Looks like you should have invested in the stock market instead of gold bars.)

I've stated that I own a business and a home. Tough poo for you if you don't like it.

You asked me how much my income is per month. I've stated that I prefer not to give you that information. Tough poo for you if you don't like it.

When you begin asking people, "hey, what's your income per month," that's what's obnoxious.

Some people are here in Korea trying to make a go at it. Most will tell you it's not perfect but they have settled in or they are toughing it out until something better comes along, or they are in a better financial situation to do something better.

No I didn't. I asked how much you charge for for an hour of 1:1 teaching. I didn't even directly ask how much you charge students to attend your hagwon (though I was curious about that as well).

Maybe people on here reading threads want to learn. It's not all about you.

This is an anonymous forum. No need to worry about having your e-feelings hurt.

Stop being so pretentious.
