So muhandojeon (Infinity Challenge, 무한도전) just had two shows featuring 1990s singers like Turbo, Lee Jeonghyeon, SES etc. and it was insanely popular: 600 seats were available and 75,000 people tried to get tickets to see it, ratings shot up, and now all the top downloaded songs on Naver are from these groups and MBC has suddenly put together weekly a show to showcase 1990s music starting the 9th of January at 11 pm.

Just a heads up for when you start seeing 1990s music everywhere again.

Foreigners/Expats aren't going to be able to tell the difference between 90's Kpop and current Kpop.

Why are you following K-pop? Why do you know the names of K-pop bands from the 1990s? If you can remember them then you're clearly out of your mid-teens. K-pop is kiddie bubble gum music. Get some taste.

I like k-pop a lot. Doesn't matter if haters gonna hate. More k-pop for me in the end.

Those 90s songs were way better than the songs today. I had never even heard those songs before until I was watching that episode with my wife. Kpop has gone downhill since then.

So is Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys, but anyone who was a teenager or in college at that time is going to remember them and their songs. You can get a roomful of hipsters and they'll still belt out "I Want It That Way" or "Wannabe" just because.

Stop turning music into some sort of ranked status platform and just enjoy it if you like and don't enjoy it if you don't.

How dare you listen to music Smithington disapproves of! We should all listen to music he likes, not Kpop like the mindless sheep in Korea.

Q: How do you know when someone has good taste in music?
A: They'll tell you.

Maybe if we ask nicely he'll let us know which bands we should be listening to.

You were a Roller Coaster fan? They were hands down my favorite band in Korea. You know they even released their 3rd album on LP? I've heard its incredibly hard to find and no one will part with it.

I wouldn't really call them K-pop though as they were a proper band.

I first heard them because my Japanese housemate's Korean girlfriend was listening to a Korean radio stream in like 2002. Me and my two American housemates were suffering through it as we played video games. Then one minute we realized that we were bobbing our heads and were like "Hey! Who the hell is this? They're actually good. Play that stuff again."

===============================================

And 1990s KPop and KPop now are two totally different animals. 1990s KPop wasn't sure what it was and what everyone wanted. You'd get influences from other music genres. Most of the songs were really innocent (which when you listen to them now is really nice. It's nice to take a break from oversexed culture once in a while). Sometimes they would go sexy like now. Some of the groups were manufactured but some were more spontaneous. Some of the groups managed to write their own songs and control their direction more. Some of the songs actually had deeper meaning about life, school, bullying, violence, bad home life, adult issues, global issues, etc.
