I have an F2-99 visa and I thought it would be no problem working a second job without having to get permission from my primary employer. However, when I checked my university contract it says that regardless of my visa status I must receive permission before starting a second job. I spoke to the director of my department who told me that under no circumstances would permission be granted to work in an academy, but it would be okay to work as a guest professor at another uni.
Anyway, what I'm wondering is whether my university would be able to find out if I were working a second job at an academy for example. I wouldn't be doing anything illegal in terms of my visa, I'd be paying tax, and the academy schedule wouldn't conflict with my university schedule.
I do understand I would be breaking my university contract and I'm not really comfortable with that, but it's frustrating as I have a lot of free time and I could use the extra cash.
Is there any way the university could find out? |

Yep! It could find out. Somebody who knows somebody who has a friend might eventually tell somebody that knows somebody at your university about it. This reply is a little silly but it has some weight to it.
I wouldn't risk it. |

Could the uni find out = possibly.
Could they terminate your contract over it = yes.
Should it stop you from taking other employment = no, UNLESS you really want to stay at said university.
The worst that happens is your uni job gets terminated.
They have NO OTHER legal option for nonperformance of an employment contract.
Unless you are a tenure track professor I wouldn't worry about it. It's just a job.

You can minimize the risk.
- Use a nickname at the "academy" (hagwon?). Obviously the owner will know your full name but when you meet for the first time just say "My name is ___________ but everyone calls me _____." The students will call you whatever you tell them your name is and don't need to know your real name.
- Make sure that the school in another part of town. Less likely that any of your university students or co-workers will see you there.
- Choose places that only teach little kids and specify that you don't want to teach teens or adults.
- Make sure that the school isn't using your picture on their website or flyers. (If you're not at least a minor celebrity then this is less likely but some schools do list their teachers on their websites.)
It's always possible that the university will find out somehow but it will probably take a while (if at all). |

Don't work at a chain hagwon. Try to find a smaller one to lessen your chances of being put on a website or flyer. |
