Everything I've read says that if it's your first visa to Korea you need to go to the Embassy/Consulate in your own country if you're applying from abroad. If you've already had multiple visas in Korea is it possible to just go to Japan?

A bit more info: I left Korea in March 2014 after having continuous visas since 2002. I'll be coming back to Korea to start work in March of this year. Can I come in on a tourist visa and do a run to Japan?

Where did you go, and how long did it take to process the visa?

Was it the same type of situation or different?

Fukuoka/Hakata...make sure you get it in by 11am. They're very...strict about times. Pick up the next day after their lunch break.

Similar situation. I had continual visas from 2010 until last fall. Went in-and-out to be as a tourist and start the process all over again. Once my visa paperwork was ready, I went to Japan end of December. No problems.

You will need all new docs prepared for visa issuance (CRC) because you have been out for so long.

I didn't need to do the CRC again because I hadn't been out of Korea for more than 2 months.

My ARC is being processed now. They had all my old information on file at kimmi...including my first horrible picture for coming here.

SPEAKING of getting your ARC...when you get that far. Make sure you go to an immigration approved hospital for your health check, that the hospital is still open (my boss sent me to one on the list that was closed for 1.5 years), and that you give them your check in a sealed envelope.

Thanks so much! It's good to know that it's still an option. All of my new paperwork is done thank goodness!

Nice. I read that it's now taking 4-5 days for a visa run. I will be doing one next month. Glad to know it can still be an overnight (or two) process.

Just be careful with where you go in Japan. It seems to differ by location. The woman at the consulate in Hakata was surprised that I thought they would take 4-5 days.

The only time you need to get a visa in your home country is when an interview is required (as in - you have a black-mark in your immigration file).

If you left on good terms with immigration (no overstays or other issues) then yes, you can return as a tourist and do a visa run to Japan or other local country.

It is of note that visa runs in Japan now take 4 working days and are NOT an overnight stay as in the past.

Let's say this is the case (conflicting information here with the OP). What would be the most economical place to go on a visa run? I would assume 4 days in Manila would be cheaper than 4 days in Japan.

I'm curious too, although I have a friend in Osaka that I could probably stay with.
