Hello,
I am in the process of transitioning schools and was wondering about the legality of fees that schools are allowed to ask the teacher for. Currently, my school is trying to get me to pay a training fee, a job interview fee and the airfare (this is the only one I understand). Any tips are very helpful!

| The only way they could ask you for anything is if it is in your contract. I'm guessing it's not. |

The ONLY thing they can claw back is the airfare as per the terms of the contract.
Everything else is illegal under the labor standards acts.
Fighting for it on the other hand is another matter.

Even with it in the contract, it's (legally) not a simple matter for employers to get back the airfare. (In reality though, they just deduct it from your pay and hope that you don't take it to court.)
Legal or not, I would avoid any place that even suggests strange fees like the ones you mentions. They are not common. (I've never heard of anyone paying them.) Still, if they suggest it then it's clear that the employer is thinking of how he can cheat you, and you can be sure that you if you work there he WILL try to cheat you in some way or another. |
