Be careful when drunk in Bangkok since your lady friend might not be a lady.

No way Japan is foreigner friendly. It is just Korea lite.

I didn't either. And I was merely conveying what Koreans say about foreign English teachers. Love it or leave it.

I don't think many ESLers care what the average adjoshi thinks of them.
Most of the fellow F-series visa people I know, pull in about 4-5 million a month for a 30-35 hour working week. Personally, I'd consider that successful.

Take home is the only number that counts.Remember if a hogwon that paid 2.3 claimed they paid 3.0 Million a monthbecause they paid airfare (200K) severance (200K) and housing (300K) they would get flamed for it.

Plus Korean money isn't dollars so it is even less valuable. Just another discount to calculate in.

Real numbers not best case numbers.

*Also a lot of recruiters for part time jobs don't want F visa people cause they can quit easily. One is just as likely to get hired for a part time job (private /hogwon/ company) without an F visa as they would with an F visa. It might be illegal but right or wrong the law is often ignored. Young pretty non male teachers are what is in demand .

Going to Japan from Korea was like stepping 20 years into the future though. It was amazing.

You have to wonder though if Korea is ever really going to be as foreigner-friendly as Japan or other countries.

Sometimes it seems that the forthcoming demographic tipping point will force a sea-change.. but then I realise the xenophobia here dates back millennia.

Why do people look at Japan as some paradise for foreigners? It was basically like Korea in terms of xenophobia back in the 80s and 90s and while better than Korea, it still exists a lot even today.

I found this after a friend had problems finding a place while in Japan:

http://www.vibetokyo.com/en/guide/housing/worst.html

Sounds just like here, although here is probably a little worse.

Korea was a racist [Mod Edit- profanity] until recently. I think Japan is more racist nowadays. I never see those right wing black vans chanting against foreigners here. Also, I and others have never had problems renting here. You get your key money back here or at least are suppose to. I paid a couple of hundred thousand won to the real estate agent. Have any you been refused a place to rent?

There are some bars and clubs that have "no foreigners" but there seems to be less of these signs than in Japan. It's cool to visit, but living there, nah. Add in low pay and they can go eff themselves.

Generally speaking, in Asia a woman's attraction to a white foreigner is inversely proportional to her income and social status...

This is why among the $1 a day Filipinas, white guys are a big trophy.

At the same time most middle and upper class Filipinas will never touch a white guy. Same thing in Thailand or almost anywhere else in Asia.

Ever notice that the majority of Korean women with foreigners in Korea are kinda on the bottom of the social scale here...

I actually here this line of thought more from foreigners than Koreans.

Most Koreans could care less about the subject.

As has been already noted, there is a tendency to wildly misrepresent the scene here in the 90's and make it seem more like it probably was in the 60's or earlier.

There was a saying back then that if you weren't here prior to 96, you didn't really know what was going on. I came in '96 and just missed it. From the late 80's until mid 96 the economy had boomed like never before, and Koreans didn't have credit card debt, so the savings and cash abounded. Most k-girls I knew back then were better off than I, but often stuck with supporting other family members. Some (in fact a large number before 97)did get to do their overseas thing, but then had to come back and get hitched to the right Korean guy.

Foreign guys were used like stepping stones just to get a bit of confidence and keep looking for something better. I remember at one time just about every foreign teacher guy I knew had his first Korean girlfriend ditch him for someone she met through him. If they got married, it was usually to the second or third girlfriend, but not usually the first.

As has been discussed here many times before, while the pay could be high, especially for privates, there was no F series visa for foreign guys, making much of the work not legal. Although the company salaries didn't seem that high, especially after 97, Korean guys would still get much further ahead on long term company benefits.

This comes up a lot on here. Maybe it's time for a poll to try and settle it. As long as people are honest we should get a good idea of how accurate your observation is

There are exceptions to this. I've met a few and some on this board CLAIM to have married Korean women from upper class families and they are doctors, lawyers, tenured public servants etc. Some of them are probably full of shit though. ESL teachers in Korea tend to exaggerate a lot like they are trying to make up for something. However, there are exceptions and they are usually young white men that hook up with a rich girl that wants to get out of any expectations placed on her i.e. marry some trophy blond guy named Scott. He thinks he's getting a free ticket in life but really has no clue what he's in for.

Your poll will get some honest answers. A lot of them will be exaggerated though. This is Dave's after all.

Often girls will do all they can to hide their past. And as a foreigner it's pretty hard to know about it. Koreans often can tell pretty fast how educated, or her social-economic status based on behavior, and language (just like we can in English).
