Embargo is not lifted yet. That won't happen as long as the Republicans are in control of Congress.

Did I miss something? Who said the embargo was lifted?

I was making a prediction based on known past behavior by the Americans.
Of course the rationale on the American side is to destroy the Cuban revolution and liquidate the state. After all the success they've had with the regime change machine why wouldn't they want to give it a go here?

What I think the Americans should do is kind of besides the point. If I let a wolf in amongst my sheep, I can say that it would be better if the wolf didn't eat the sheep. Hell, I could even wax poetic about it. But I shouldn't be surprised when it happens. In fact, I would be extremely stupid to expect that it wouldn't try. Even if that wolf had a Nobel peace prize.

But like I said, Cubans are full of surprises. They haven't shown a strong inclination to gracefully accept their proper role as American rentboys, and so things may well go down differently. We'll see.

Okay. So, so whenever you used to hear your fellow anti-imperialists say "The US needs to lift the embargo on Cuba!" you would reply "No! That would mean normailzing relations, and that would be like letting the sheep in among wolves"?

Ah, who am I kidding? It's a good thing this is happening. At least the Cuban Five got out. And it is also good it begins while the Castro are still alive. Raul:
Quote:
We reiterate our willingness to establish a respectful dialogue on our differences based on reciprocity. We have firm convictions and many concerns about what is happening in the United States in terms of democracy and human rights, and we would agree to talk on the basis of the principles referred to previously, about any issue, and about all what the US might be willing to discuss, about the situation here Cuba but also about the situation in the United States.

No one should expect Cuba to renounce the ideas for which it has struggled for more than a century, and for which its people have shed lots of blood and run the biggest risks in order to improve its relations with the United States.

It is necessary to understand that Cuba is a sovereign State whose people, through a free referendum held to approve the Constitution, chose a socialist path as well as its political, economic and social system (APPLAUSE).

We will demand respect for our system in the same way that we have never intended the United States to change its political system.

Both governments should take mutual steps to prevent and avoid any action that might affect the progress achieved in bilateral relations, based on the observance of the law and the constitutional order of both Parties.

They're going in with their eyes open at least.

Remember, Cuba has had normal relations with most of the West for decades now.

The USA does not have "normal" relations with any country. DC doesn't even have a 'normal' relationship with American citizens, cities, states, etc. It sees the globe as comprised of provinces, some of which are loyal and some disobedient.

Obama is merely shifting the 'regime change' strategy. Sanctions did not work. The NGO's and capitalists will now give it a go.

The companies were taken over and lost a long time ago, get over it. There are countries the US does business with that are a lot worse in my opinion.
