I just had a really weird interview. The only thing that the guy actually asked me was why I was leaving my current school. It didn't sound like he actually talked to my boss. It seemed he was ready to hire me when I walked through the door.

He then launched into a 1 hour monologue about his business and the business's past and how he grew it to be the hiring beast it is today. Then he explained the contract and asked me if I wanted to work for him. I told him I needed a couple of days to think it over but I was extremely interested.

It's an after school company that hires you and sends you to a single school for a year.

The reason I'm waffling over it is that 3 days a week the hours are 12 to 5:30 and twice a week the hours are 1 to 5:30 for 2.2 a month. Those hours are hard to pass up. Is it too sketch to take? Is it worth the risk?

Both the hours and the salary are correct.
The please start" right away" is correct as well. School starts very soon and many schools are scrambling to have the new afterschool programs in place.

Does this contract provide housing and has the company been in business for a long time? Stability matters a great deal in these kind of situations.
The other thing is, I'm quite sure he is just trying to get a quick hiring bonus by placing you at the school.

If you have read and re-read the contract and it sounds like something you'd want to do, by all means take it. I've had interviews that lasted about one minute.

Me: Hello?
Him: Is this "Donna?"
Me: Yes, who's calling?
Him: Your voice sounds great. Can you fly here this weekend to start work on Monday?
Me: Who is this, again?

Are you currently in Korea and are you really knowledgeable with how things work here? If so, that is more reason to take the job. If not, please ask around before making a final decision.

They provide rent and key money to a limit. Normal for after school gigs as I understand. The contract is standard. Nothing that jumps out as "we are going to screw you". It's a run of the line average contract.

I'm just worried he's desperate because he has a bad rep or something so he'll hire anything that moves.

Then again the company has this super extensive youtube channel about what they do and how their program works.

But it felt like I was interviewing him. He was trying to sell himself. He mentioned how competitive it was to get foreign teachers.

Then again......Asia is just weird.

If this is your first gig in Korea, I would advise against the find your own apartment and key money thing, but if you know what you're doing, take it.
Some schools do hire anything that moves. (Especially white females, because this means the kids will get a "real" education, according to the Korean moms that I know)

If not, wait for anothe offer. He's probably in a contest to get the placement money. One of my other schools used three recruitment agencies and one lady asked me if I'd say yes to her "first" so she could get the bonus money being offered.

Oh my god. I had the exact same thing. The man boasted for ages about his school and how competitive it is and kept saying that I will struggle to get a job anywhere else so I better work for this place.
We might have had the same school/ interviews?
Was yours in Seoul by any chance?

Just outside, technically. Indeogwon station. Not a school though. It's a company that runs after school English programs in public schools. They hire teachers and place them at a school for the year.

I decided to go with it after they agreed to pay more of my rent than originally offered. I'm going to assume that my extended teaching experience and being a petite blue eyed western female was what did the trick.

He didn't try to tell me about the job market. It was like he was trying sell himself to me, that he was good at business and that the company wasn't going under any time soon because they have so many teachers.

Sometimes after living in Asia so long, it's hard to tell if the weird thing that is happening is weird here or not. And sometimes weird just becomes normal. I figure no matter how bad the school they place me at is, I can put up with almost anything for 5 hours a day.

Beware the after-school agencies. Some of the government after-school contracts were cornered by gangster elements that rip off/ don't pay teachers. This was true in the Gwangmyeong/ Geumchon/Anyang areas until at least 2010. Massive turnover through these schemes. I got burned to the tune of 3M and someone else I know got the same.

Eh. Korea is the kind of place you have to beware everything and everyone. Honesty just doesn't seem to be something that people pride themselves on having. It's not a valued virtue. You have to beware everything when you are changing your situation.

Lie, Cheat and Steal would be Korea's house words if this were game of thrones.

Then they could screen people who are too fat or not busty enough.

The photo requirement has to go if they ever get serious about battling inequality.
