Stay out of it. It's none of your business. You will cause problems between the other workers and your boss. |

Don't worry about not doing anything, because just by being there and being sober you are doing something. I think leading by example is the best way here. The boss knows you don't drink, and sees you showing up on time and sober. When he is ready to stop, he knows just who to turn to- talk to and what to do.
I think there is really no way to get him to stop until he is ready- often meaning reaching a real bottom. Just being there straight and sober you are doing more than you know already. Monday morning just give him a cheerful smile and hearty hello (bright and early) and that will say truckloads. |

\\@Nester Noodlemon: I acknowledged that it was none of business in the heading of my post. How would I cause problems between other workers and my boss? Please explain. |

There's already talk between you and the other workers about your boss. You will only escalate things by becoming more involved. It's sort of like dating coworkers. More often than not, it's better to keep things professional at work. Don't be the snooping aunt who wants to fix things. |

| It's awkward to talk with other people about those types of issues, but maybe you can make it about you instead of him in order to save face for the guy. Maybe you can say something like, "Boss, I've gone from drinking one beer a week to three and I'm worried if I don't stop it'll go to four and so on and I'll be out of control. I want to stop drinking alcohol completely but it would help me if I had a teammate. I do better when I don't want to let someone else down, especially my boss. Can we try to go the next week without drinking any alcohol and then see how far we can make it? Will you be my teammate on this?" |
@EZE: Thanks for the most sensible approach to this sensitive subject.
This is a good idea except there is ONE problem. He knows I've never drank a beer in my life. He has known me for 8 years! He used to not drink or smoke, either. That is why I am so concerned about him now. These are all fairly NEW recent habit developments because of financial/school situations. He said he feels trapped. |
Ask him to go to the gym with you every night after work then, i may take his mind off the boozing if he has something else to focus on. He might even get laid there... |

Over 20 years working in Korea, and the best advice I can give you is to quit as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Lie and make up an excuse, but don't make it about the boss.
Do NOT engage others in conversation about your boss's drinking, just quietly find another job and move on. Period, |
