What literature is taught in Korean class in the Korean school system?
I can't recall ever seeing students with a novel they're reading for class.
In "English" class in Canada we read novels (Lord of the Flies, Kill a Mockingbird), and Shakespeare (Macbeth, Hamlet). I can't remember well, but I think we were reading novels in Grade 5. |

Many years ago, I taught at a very expensive institute in Bundang, specifically for students trying to enter foreign language high schools. The middle schoolers there were all reading "The Old Man and the Sea" in English. Pretty impressive. |

Why would they want Korean kids to read a novel in English? Would be way too difficult for the average student. |

That's not what he's asking. What he's asking is, "What kind of material do the students today in Korea get in Korean class? Do they study novels either written in Korean or translated into Korean?" |

One example is 장마 by 윤홍길. As mentioned in the movie 'My Sassy Girl'.
Personally speaking: I tried to read it, but couldn'tfinish it. |

Why would something be considered too difficult?
There are a lot of things to choose from with varying levels of difficulty.
In the US, I read Caesar's "Gallic Wars" in Latin & "Mosen Millan" in Spanish. Required reading for second year students in each language.
I survived.
A better question might be "What literature might be being used in Korean Class?" besides Hong Gil Dong .... |
