My boss just informed my fellow teachers and me that we have to go to some place in Incheon for some government lecture or training or something on Saturday from 9 to 1. It wasnt too clear to me. He said that ALL teachers in Incheon are required to go, including Korean teachers. Has anybody ever heard about this?

The Korean teacher at my school went last year and told me to bring a walkman because its really boring. He slept through the entire thing so he caouldnt give me any specific details about what was being talked about during the lecture.

I have heard of teachers attending these things before. I have no idea if they are compulsory or not but you can decide if its worth fighting ith your boss about.

It will be all in Korean of course so unless you understand the language at a pretty fluent level you might want to take the mp3 player and/or large amounts of reading material.

Don't go, it's not mandatory, at least from the perspective of whether or not you retain your E2 visa. Usually they charge ten thousand Won also for the inconvenience.

Gangwondo has a similar annual deal for foreign hagwon teachers. They put on a 2 or 3-hour saturday seminar, largely in english but largely useless. 'They' would be some obscure branch of the provincial education ministry looking to be seen to be hosting an event.

Your hagwon director, if he is legitimately accredited, is obliged to have all his workers register (i.e. sign in & be present) or is subject to a hefty fine. There is a registration fee but no way should the teachers have to pay it.

Refusing to attend puts your director in a really difficult position. Is one saturday out of 52 worth poisoning your workplace relationship?

How many of these have you been to? I was the speaker at last year's meeting. Yeah, I guess it was useless... Laughing

Nothing personal demophobe! I attended a couple 4 or 5 years ago & there was in fact a native speaker made an earnest presentation of some teaching tips. It was kinda lost though amid all the standard bureaucratic pomp & ceremony.

If they want you to go to a seminar on your day off....do what I did:

demand overtime payment for transportation, meals, accomodations, time spent at seminar and travel time. Needless to say they made a quick decision that we did not have to attend after all.

Same here.

My school wanted me to attend weekend seminars for the books I was teaching, however, they were conducted solely in Korean, except for the parts where they were pretending to teach english Rolling Eyes all of which I had the useless videos for... don't go.
