Does anyone have any experiences using a Korean bank card in America?
I have an account with Kookmin Bank, also known as KB Star. My card is a Visa card with the Plus logo..I have told them that I want to use it in America and on American websites. It definitely works for American websites..but will I have any problems using it in the States? I'll be there for one month.

| Make sure your card can be used for purchases and not just for ATM withdrawals. My card won't let me make purchases in America, but I can take money out of the ATM. My card has the visa logo as well. |

| I remember with my KEB bank card that they had to authorize it on their computer system to work overseas. It didn't matter what it said on the card. |

That's what the bank clerk said to my wife. It made me so irritated because I requested that visa card for that specific purpose. They gave me a card that would only work with ATMs, but gave my wife a card that would work for POS. I'm sure I could get one, but we just haven't bothered to go back since we can just use my wife's card. |

I cannot cover every possible combination of online authentication process in use with American websites, but for future reference, please mind that there are two different types of using one's Korean credit/debit/check card.
The first type is simple and straightforward, that is to type in your (Korean) card number, expiry date, CVC number directly to the merchant's payment page. Amazon.com is a good example. Those linked to PayPal, such as eBay, are not exactly the same, but user experience isn't that much different.
The second type is the tricky one - American (or any other non-Korean) website asks for card number and CVC, but then the next step automatically calls up authentication plug-in that is specific to one's issuing bank. Usually, 'Verified by VISA' or 'MasterCard SecureCode' logo accompanies this procedure, yet the plug-in itself is a Korean one.
You need to have registered with your bank in Korea (which can be initialized on the bank's own website) for such authentication method, set up your password. Korean banks being Korean, these plug-ins are still browser-specific to Internet Explorer, even in year 2015. The fact that you have zero glitch on American website of your interest using other browsers - Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc - is irrelevant, as long as a Korean bank plug-in has to kick in. A very likely situation is that you see the plug-in 'apparently loading' on screen, but you never progress to its password input screen. In that case, you have to start over on IE.
Plus, although this may be a common knowledge by now, there's 1% add-on fee to VISA/Mastercard network and further 0.25~0.5% fee to the issuing Korean bank when the payment gets billed/debited to one's Korean Won account. |
