What wildlife (specifically mammals) have you personally spotted in Korea?

Plenty of weasels in itaewon.

The foxes hang out in Apgujeong.

Big dog barking and howling outside my bedroom window last night. Seriously, scared my kids and left a huge pile of shit in the hallway. Mrs. Rogers was not impressed, and tore a strip of the guard Adjushi this morning.

That wildlife is going to be dead if it comes back again.

My wife says that Korean chipmunks are exported out of Korea because they're so beautiful and perfect. Apparently, American chipmunks are not as beautiful and gorgeous as Korean ones.

I replied: "It's due to the pure Korean chipmunk blood, and American chipmunks must have diluted the bloodline and are no longer beautiful and pure."

I was told the american grey ate all the pretty korean squirrels[yeah, get a korean to actually pronounce THAT(squirrel) word in english correctly, will ya???!!!???]. Korean dude I worked with about ten yrs ago got a good pic(while I was standing beside him) of a korean squirrel. Looked like a little stringy piece of snaky meat if you ask me. Don't see what all the bother is about unless they are truly going extinct or sth.

p.s. to schwa. I'm not a big wildlife watcher or pic taker, but I did see, and get an alright pic, of one of those little korean deers in a nearby mtn in busan one time. I think it was while my son and i were running from a couple of rabid hounds at an even nearerby (creepy) mtn temple. Haven't been back THERE since, but if any1 REALLY needs to know, look for JEONPO AREA...OTHER side of the new business park.

I've seen quite a few red Eurasian squirrels but only a handful of the native black squirrels, which are quite distinct with prominent upright ears.

I find it heartening to spot any wild critters. They arent many.

Finally! Someone else who has also seen a weasel. I've twice seen them in the Sadang/Isu area of Seoul and people thought I was nuts for saying so. Could have been the same little fella twice, who knows?
I've seen a couple snakes, some deer, and a dingy looking black squirrel thing. The squirrel was not impressive.

I saw a weasel at the Yangjae stream. Lots of deer even just outside of Seoul.
Only thing I can add to this is an owl, in Gangwon-do.

Ah~ a thread I can weave a few tales into~

The only weasel I saw was a roadkill in 2011, but I was shocked to see it.
Having owned several ferrets in the past, by far my favorite pet/wild life.

Other than that,
Deer: Not the most handsome of animals but I did come across one that was
ensnared in an illegal wire snare. Somehow it managed to get the snare
around it's midsection. It must've been there for days at least as the wire
caused deep, fly infested wounds. I couldn't get near enough to remove it as
it was constantly moving away from me, so I untied the wire from it's tree-trunk anchor.
I like to think it would recover and loosen/chew the wire off
later and I gained a few karma points. I tried~

Owls: I've seen a handful. The first one with at least a 6' wingspan flew
meters above my head and landed on a distant branch. He disappeared
before I could take a picture. Stealthy animals! Not.a.sound when he
passed by me. I did manage to get a photo of a small one napping and so well
camouflaged, no idea how I spotted'em.

Hawks: Just last week at least a dozen birds were going berserk in the bushes outside
my window and pointed it out to my wife. I walked up to the window to see a hawk swooping
down for an apparent kill and thought, 'a-ha!'

Raccoon dogs: First one I saw I spotted pulling into my apartment late at night with
gnarled and matted hair with the instantaneous, "W.T.F.??" and later seen
several others also late at night driving by. Very slow and methodical
animals but ONLY seen at night.

Squirrels, moles, rabbit, chipmunks...yep.

Boar? Unsure. I was in a ravine with a lot of vegetation. But the unmistakable grunt of a swine had us both running in different directions.

Pheasants? Plenty...with that ugly a$$ squawk they make as they spring from reeds and tall grass, they scare the bejesus out of me every time.

Many snakes. The most common being the harmless king snake in open areas and roads.
But the mountainous vipers are there and I was lucky
enough to not be bitten as they are small and VERY well concealed. When in danger, they
tend to shake their tails like a rattlesnake but without a rattle, but it makes
enough noise to cause me to pause and look down to see I nearly stepped
on several. Not aggressive, but I give them plenty of respective space.
Diamond shaped, flat heads, can't be mistaken~ A definite 'be careful' note. I did get several cool videos and photos though!

Personally, I'm thrilled to see any wildlife and to see it make a come-back.

This was one of my favorite spottings, one afternoon in tall grass in a chestnut grove right next to a big apartment complex. I got within a couple meters of him & we made some eye contact. Handsome animal, looked like this:

Rare here. Its actually a species of fox.

I hear you~ they are a wonderous animal. The ones i saw were in the northern chungcheongbuk region to northern daegu being the last one, a FAR distance from the protective DMZ and assume they are making a great recovery! If I'm not mistaken, they have the oddest mating? calls i think comes from them, like a deep-guttural-fox-bark that carries? Ha~ who knows?

Perfect quote of the day....

The impurity of it all. Korean chipmunk Hitler is rolling over in disgust in his furry grave at Korean chipmunks going abroad to get it on with other chipmunks.

We were shooting tank gunnery near Pocheon about 5 years back. There are lots of wild animals that run around inside the range. Plenty of deer and wild boar. Anyway, we were shooting gunnery and the commander engaged a target at the same time an unsuspecting deer came into the picture. That tank round split it in half, looked exactly like the scene in Terminator 2 when the robot's head was split in half.
