Greetings,

I am in a peculiar situation in that I am technically a gyopo though I am chinese. Both my parents were born in Korea. My father is currently working full-time in Korea so he is still a citizen. My mother hasn't been to Korea in ~35 years so I'm guessing she is no longer a citizen. I read that to get an F-4 visa, the parent/grandparent had to have citizenship in the past but is currently living in another country. This applies to my mother. Problem is my mother is fairly clueless on these things and I am not sure if she knows where all her documents are. Would getting an F-4 really be that much easier?

The F4 follows the father side of the family registry. Meaning, if your father is currently a Korean citizen and is living in Korea, you dont qualify for military exemption. There are steps you had to follow when applying for the F4 visa. You must have renounced your Korean citizenship before your 18th birthday if your father is a Korean citizen and has reported you on the family registry. If this step was not completed, you do not qualify for the F4. If your father did not report you on the registry, you will need to provide proof that he is your biological father. In most cases, this step can easily be completed by visiting the the Gu Cheong (government complex) Office with your father. However, this would make you eligible for the mandatory military service. Send me a PM with your contact info and we can go over it in more detail.
