I know it's still winter, but looking at flights for the upcoming summer and it's hard not to make a purchase now. I'm looking at a little over $1,000 each for my daughter and me in July/Aug. I know the price of oil is pretty low and I don't foresee the price getting much better. Would you go ahead and buy now? Cheers.

No, I wouldn't because my schedule in Korea isn't fixed enough to buy so far ahead.

According to what I've read, six to eight weeks ahead is far enough in advance to get the best ticket deals.

Prices may go down due to lower fuel costs but that's certainly not a given.

Gasoline prices have slowly started to rise back up in the last week or so here in Texas. Last week I was paying 1.43 for premium in San Antonio. This week the price of regular shot back up to 1.75, just a week after King Abdulla kicked the bucket. Maybe the Saudis are cutting back a little on production? No idea.

That depends on your destination. You should know how much you paid previously and you can easily judge if 1000usd is a good price or not. Booking very early might not be crucial for non-peak periods but if you want to travel during the Holidays or the summer than there is no such thing as booking too early. Especially when you are flying out of Korea in late July/early Aug. as the whole country is on vacation literally at the same time and many are travelling abroad. Just make sure to check the refund/cancellation policy on the ticket. Anything could happen in 6 months.

Interesting that even though the crude oil prices have increased in the last few days, my nearest LPG pump lowered their price by nearly 10% this Monday. I know it's not gasoline but their prices are always moving together.

I think it might have to do with the United Steelworkers strike: http://www.ibtimes.com/oil-refinery-strike-steelworkers-strike-against-big-oil-nine-plants-across-country-1803888.

Quote:
The United States' first nationwide refinery strike since 1980 moved into its third day Tuesday, threatening to spread even as negotiations continue over a new national contract. About 3,800 workers at nine sites walked off their jobs Sunday, after talks broke down between the United Steelworkers and Royal Dutch Shell, which is leading negotiations for the oil and gas industry.

Both sides are back at the bargaining table this week, but if they’re unable to hammer out a new collective bargaining agreement, the work stoppage could spread to other union sites. In all, the USW represents 30,000 workers responsible for roughly two-thirds of the nation’s refining capacity.

As for the OP's question: prices are unlikely to go down much, as consumers have already adjusted to paying the higher prices and most flights are already full.

Prices will only get more expensive. The price is only $1,000?? I would snatch that up right away. It hasn't been that cheap since probably around 2004-5 to go from here to the States.

Is that $1000 for one-way or round-trip? There are currently one-way July & August economy fares below $600 from most major U.S. cities (Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, etc.). You can visit https://www.google.com/flights/, click one-way, enter the city information, and then click the calendar symbol. It will automatically display the lowest fare for every date on the calendar.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry forgot to mention the destination: Florida. Decided to take the plunge and purchase the tickets. My daughter and I, round trip, $2,200. I figure it's worth the risk since I don't think prices will be cheaper for the time we're travelling (July 8-Aug 5), but I fear they could be VERY expensive if I wait until spring. Cheers.

Probably not for North American carriers. They've been hurting bad since 9/11.
