That thing on the right hand side is a set of tanks that you can see through and refill as necessary (from ink bottle refills) rather than buying those little ink cartridges.
They work OK for mid-volume uses (like schools or home office) but for general home use (where you don't really print that much) the heads tend to block and printing quality goes down.
