I just bought a new notebook today at a local store, Samsung 14" & they were happy to install english windows 8 for free. It acts pretty snazzy. Cost me 435,000 won. Did I do okay? I truly have no clue but it seemed reasonable. My Korean friend says it would have cost over a million a year ago. |

Windows 10 is about to be released and is pretty cool. I bought a macbook air (first mac ever) about 9 months ago and am really pleased with their OS, however my wife hates macintosh, so we'll forever be purchasing both types.
I think you did well for that price though, especially for buying in Korea.

If you're going for an ultralight notebook I really think the Air is the best value you're going to find, honestly. PC alternatives are either super cheap (ChromeBook), not as good and not that much cheaper, or way more expensive. Probably not so in Korea though. |

You bought a new notebook for 435K - but the only thing we know is that it's Samsung 14". Usually, to determine whether you got a good deal or not, one would have to know the rest of the specs. Alas, this is eslcafe, so let's keep our expectations low and run with it
On gmarket - a regular samsung notebook with that screen size (with Win costs around 370K. So, it appears that you could have saved 60K, but it's not a big loss, considering that you are probably unable to install your own windows (I gather you are not all that tech-savvy) - so you'd probably spend a bit of money on that alone. |

Yep, I'm probably the most tech-unsavvy person you could meet. Its an ATIV Book2 which I see Gmarket has at 379k won. I'm fine with the difference for the convenience.
I guess I posted because I was pleasantly surprised at the price. I anticipated having to spend a good bit more. Its a nice little machine, more than adequate for my modest uses. |

nah the air is completely and utterly eclipsed by a lot of offerings on the market as of now. they will do a refresh very very soon though and that might bring the air back into the ultralight game.
my vaio pro 13 trounces the air in the ultralight game. carbon fiber construction, full hd screen (most glaring omission of the air), lightest 13' notebook at the time and even still in the runnings today, all with a touch-screen. (i still believe it's the lightest touchscreen 13' notebook even almost a year and a half after it's release). sony is the indisputed king of miniaturization though so it's not too surprising. |

Those are more expensive than the Air though (in the States at least). When I bought my Air the Vaio Pro 13 was running something like $1,300+ and the 13 inch Air was only $850, thus my comment on PC options being way more expensive. |

To be fair, Sony Vaio is one of the most overpriced notebook options out there.
What makes PC market so great is that there is a multitude of various PC brands to pick from - many are very well priced and are much more affordable than either apple or vaio, while featuring similar specs. |

If that's the case in the States then I totally missed these mid-range options when I was looking for a laptop. I found a lot of kind of crappy PC options with poor reviews for ~$600, then the Vaio for a lot more than the Air. I was specifically looking for an ultralight, and the Air really seemed like the best value, even when I went in wanting to buy a PC. |
