Teacher fined for bullying mixed-race student

An award-winning public school teacher was sentenced to a fine of 3 million won ($2,735) for making discriminatory remarks against a sixth grade multicultural student in the classroom last year.
The female student, whose father is Canadian and mother is Korean, was scolded by the teacher for not eating kimchi in her school in Suwon last June.
The 50-year-old teacher asked her why she wouldn’t eat kimchi when “she is half-Korean,” and stated that her future (Korean) mother-in-law would not like it should she find out her daughter-in-law does not eat the traditional fermented Korean dish.
“We acknowledge that the teacher, as an educator, caused great emotional distress to the student with an international background,” the court said.
The teacher, who has some 30 years of teaching experience, had been awarded by the Suwon Office of Education in 2004 for her work.
The Suwon Office of Education did not take any disciplinary action against her, other than issuing a simple warning, when the student’s parents filed an official complaint to the police in August.
“Our rule is that teachers who have been awarded by the government get a certain degree of exemption when they face disciplinary action. If she hadn’t won the award, she would have faced heavier punishment,” Lee Won-mi from the Suwon Office of Education told The Korea Herald.
In May last year, the teacher made the whole class call the student “stupid” thrice loudly for “asking too many questions” in class.
Another time, the teacher asked those who take private education lessons outside of the classroom to raise their hands.
Among the students who did, the teacher pointed at the multicultural student and said “you are particularly a (financial) burden on your parents.”
The student, who moved to Korea from Canada with her parents in 2010, reportedly underwent therapy for a number of months after suffering emotionally from such remarks by the teacher.
The student’s parents told local media that the teacher never apologized properly, and should not be allowed to remain in the education field.
Prosecutors said they would appeal against the court decision, as the teacher can be removed from her position only if she is sentenced to imprisonment.
According to the Suwon education office, the teacher is currently not teaching at the school in Suwon, and has been on sick leave since last year. |

| Does this story really surprise anyone? Par for the course my friends, par for the course. Buck up, move on. Never expect Koreans to conform to the PC culture of the west, at least for another 10000 years. Korea is for Koreans, period. |

Are things like this reported in Korean or just in English?
My mother-in-law could benefit from a Korean language version of this article. She firmly believes that there is no racism in Korea. I am a white guy from Canada and my korean wife and I are on the same page. My wifes mother is living in a fantasy land version of Korea. |

There's surely more to this story than is being reported -- the poor kid was clearly hurt and needed therapy -- the parents reported the bullying to the police, so whatever happened, it was likely to be far worse than just some teacher teasing the kid 'for not liking Kimchi' , teasing the kid 'about her future Korean mother in law' , or telling off the kid three times 'for asking too many questions'.
They aren't telling us the full story.
They likely set up the story to look like that in the press so that Koreans will read it and think foreigners are over sensitive and over reacting. Koreans will think, "Those foreigners! Coming here, expecting special treatment and crying when asked why they don't like Kimchi! Ridiculous !"

I kinda agree a bit with Died By Bear; however, I'm at the 17+yr here now, and I prefer to take no shit from the complaining Koreans, including my kids, or "halfies". I had a substitute (Korean) teacher, just yesterday, walk into my home and tell me to stow the cats (we have 2) as she didn't like cats. I pointed at the hamster in the corner and asked her about that. "I hate ALL animals!!!" Good lord. I, of course, stowed the cats, and asked her to try HARD to not look at the hamster. I wish I could've then asked her for an invite to her home for an English lesson to improve her's, or whomever's, maybe her mom's? I would then ask her to stow the stinky-ass kimchi in her fridge as I'm not too partial to it. F'in rude of the teacher, if nothing else. Definitely rude for a supposedly rewarded public school teacher. Wish I could force her st0Opid kid's face down into a delicious cheeseburger, just off the grill, for fun.
p.s. GJoeM, pretty sure private schooling is still off the books here. Seems to be in Busan anyway. We have to send our oldest kid to school if he's deadly sick for the "teacher" to make the decision as to whether he should go home or to a hospital or whatever. All has to do with the "attendance" thing in Korea. Even for a second-grader...  |

What kind of monster hates all animals? I was shocked the first few times I met Koreans who told me they hate all animals, but then it all started making sense - the lack of empathy, the lack of consideration for others, the hatred of languages/music/food/culture not Korean etc etc.
What a rotten place. |

Yeah. Easy for YOU to say, pal. I've got a pair. A true pair. My wife. AND her mom. Neither of them really likes cats. Thank G0d neither of them hates them, and ALL animals, like some of 'em do. Thx for ur concern, but ma bawlz be just fine, thx. Suck em as u wish 2 find the truth, [b][Mod Edit- swearing][/b]. Anyway, I stuck my cats in my son's room for less than 2 hrs. and, yes. I complained to my wife about the pathetic sub. |

| I could grin and bear it as a single man and put money in the bank. But after my son was born I decided we had to leave Korea. Basically it came doown to, I think my son would be better off poor in Canada than rich in Korea. |

I want a Maine Coon, or a Norwegian Forest cat. They are fluffy and awesome looking. I've heard that both of those breeds are extremely smart kittahs. |
