I've known a couple of visiting and tenure track lit profs over the years. Funniest story I heard came from a guy who is ABD in lit. They asked him to teach lit at his university as he has a lot of experience. He said that it didn't take long before he had no choice to break out videos. Granted, that wasn't at a particularly good university, but the key is to not get your expectations up too high, especially if you've never taught the stuff before!

Some high schools have students that have mostly lived abroad. I taught literature at a foreign language high school as an afterschool class. Almost all of my students were pretty close to fluent. The students in that program regularly got into top US universities.

What are your qualifications, if you don't mind my asking? Did you need a teachers lisence? MA?

No license. MA in literature from a top 10 school.
