Hey, I'm starting a new job in Yesan in March. Anyone have any information? Anyone living there? |

I lived there many moons ago.
It's a typical small country city. There were usually 4-6 foreigners living there. Not a whole lot of things to do but it's got a train (or bus) to Cheonan and on to Seoul, not too far from Daejeon either. It's also close to Daecheon Beach which is quite popular.
I enjoyed my year there, as did most people, but if you're someone who craves wild nightlife and tons of foreigners, you might struggle.
One thing that makes it different from most of Korea is that the countryside is flat, not mountainous like most of the country.
Send me a PM if you have specific questions. |

As far as your access to the capital for whatever metropolitan experience is concerned:
Train ride to Seoul(Yongsan) takes about 1h 50 minutes, so that's 2 hours, plus connecting rides, to access Central Seoul or Sinchon/Hongdae area, for example. Difference between Mugunghwa and Saemaeul trains are <10 minutes, so negligible in terms of time, but the fare is not. Still, both combined, you get roughly hourly train schedule.
Access to Gangnam area could be better served by express buses, but there are only 5 runs a day. Fares by class are similar to train tickets, almost equal estimated journey time unless you get stuck in heavy traffic, yet you save about 30-40 minutes compared to reaching Gangnam area from Yongsan. |

Yesan is a charming town. There is a section around a lake that is called a "slow town" which means certain professions are designated to be done slowly and in more traditional ways.
Deoksan the next town west is a resort town, very nice for spas, etc. Resom Spa is really nice!! |
