Korea is just like any other country, good and bad people. However I would not advise anyone to ever have business relationships or any relationship where money is involved with Koreans.

"The success of Samsung’s Mobile in the US began a rift with the Korean headquarters. Sources say the more successful Samsung was in the US, the more complicated the relationship with headquarters got. Instead of getting credit, the US team felt they were being chastised for doing their jobs well. (Samsung declined to comment on this story.)

It got so bad, a source told us, that Samsung flew a plane full of executives to the mobile division’s office in Dallas for an unannounced audit that lasted three weeks in 2012. The Dallas-based employees had to go through all materials they used to sell and market Samsung’s mobile products. They were accused of falsifying sales, bribing the media, and a bunch of other damaging actions that hurt morale in the office. The same US-based office that helped turn Samsung into a brand as recognizable as Apple was suddenly being punished for its work.

After three weeks, the Korean auditors found nothing wrong with the way the US office had been operating and went home. But the damage had been done, and the perception remained at the Korean headquarters that despite its success, the US team was up to no good.

Anyone who knows Korea can see what happened in this situation.

Oh yes. Xiaomi’s rise meant Samsung’s decline in China. Hello Xiaomi, goodbye Samsung.

This has repeatedly happened to me with teaching jobs. The better you are at your work, the more jealous some other Korean members of staff become. Then they go all out to ruin you. There is a culture of jealousy and spite here that prevents the individual from excelling.

This is also one of the factors that took down Sega. Sega America & Sega Japan could never agree on anything and Sega Japan was rumoured to constantly give Sega America projects to work on while working secretly on their own version in Japan and would make up silly reasons to delay Sega America. All the while Sega America's project never had a chance of being implemented and was just either A: Bus work to keep them distracted or B: a source to steal ideas from.

This is exactly what happened to Sega of America led by Tom Kalinske and Sega of Japan when the Genesis was doing gangbusters in America. Sega of Japan got jealous. I've read about it for years. I've heard things like Hayao Nakayama was leading the charge against SoA and I've read stuff that he was chastising SoJ brass for not doing as well as SoA.

SoJ's plan paid off. The Saturn was a modest hit in Japan doing far better than the Genesis while the surprise launch, high price point and woefully difficult to program hardware killed the Saturn in the US.

I'm guessing there is more to the story that what is being reported in the article. I mean, are we seriously being asked to believe that Samsung Korea gets outraged every time one of their overseas divisions goes into the black? Samsung wants to make money, and if the American branch is bringing in it, in the absence of any other issues, Samsung Korea would almost certainly be happy with that.

My guess would be that, at the very least, Samsung Korea had heard rumours(credible or otherwise) that things weren't 100% above-board in the USA, and sent in the auditors.

Who found absolutely nothing to substantiate those petty rumors, even after three weeks of digging...

Yeah, I'm not saying that there was neccessarily anything to back up the original concerns. Just that I highly doubt the standing policy of Korean companies is to punish the people who are making the most money.

Another scenario might be that some big ego in Seoul had loudly predicted that the Americans would fail, and then when they didn't, he tried to save face by proving that they had engaged in dodgy practices. Still not the same thing as that being the default treatment of succesful branches.

Samsung is reaping the seeds they have sowed these days. I know they are in no danger of going out of business, but they have been knocked off the pedestal a little.

Humble pie is on the menu. Heather Cho, now them.

Not only will staff members get jealous of others' success, but even management often wants to rain on the parade, even if the success helps the company. If you are popular or successful, it's perceived as a threat and will be trampled, even if they have to make stuff up (the audit).

"Petty and vindictive" probably describes most Korean management pretty well. Guaranteed there was a certain amount of jealousy going on here. The US team got a reality check about who they were really working for.
