Haha, actually no....
Rent is how you choose. I chose to stay in this area. You can also find a cheaper area near itawon or out of gangnam.
Drama is how you define it....
Take home is much more than "average joe"...
Working hard is a perspective.
People like you are the reasons why hagwons view Americans as lazy in Korea... no offense... trying to cut all and possible corners. Never want to work. Thats how you stay with 2.1 and can't snag the 4.5+ .
Good luck. |
I snag much more than 4.5+ per month and my schedule looks a lot better than yours. I have been in Korea for a long long time. I'm an old American guy that has a Korean wife and Korean relatives here. You are making pocket change for that bs job. |
You know what.... you're pretty much deluded if you think someone who just arrives in Korea is going to make more than 4.5+ with a 20 hour work week whether they are here with an E2 or F4.
You just said admitted that you've been here a long time. That's a different story. No one who just comes to Korea can suddenly line up multiple jobs that fit a 20 hour week and a 4 + salary. Maybe except you, who's hitting 40 and gonna stay here dead-end. That's your life carved out. I'm posting this for the gyopos just like me from overseas who's plan is a temporary stay.
Look old man, you wanna troll, fine, go ahead. And no one asked if you have a korean wife and relative. That's not even part of this job discussion. So if you need some validation, get it from you Korean wife, old timer.
Gyopos, if you're reading this, do your research. Look for the 4+ jobs in Daechi and Apgujeung area. Don't settle for the 2.1 bullshit that some of these people are touting as godsend. If you want free time yea go ahead. But if you plan on stacking dough real fast in a year or two then head back, this is probably the best option. Obviously, if you have connections, family, it's a different story.
Okay. Done with this b.s shitters on my thread. |

You don't have a 20 hour work week. You probably have something in the neighbourhood of a 50-60 hour work week. That's about 17,500/hour
After schools pay 25,000/hour and privates pay 40-70/hour.
A hagwon guy pulling 2.8 (including housing, 2.3+500,000 housing, fairly common in seoul) and working 2-10 5 days a week makes 17,500/hour.
You're making what a hagwon employee makes, you're just putting in extra hours. Any idiot can work extra hours for the same pay.
Its not really something to be proud of. |

I have come to the same conclusion. dhan89 is making around 16.000 won per hour. That's less than minimum wage equivalence here in the ESL industry. I was turning down 20,000 won per hour overtime offers years ago due to the fact that part time jobs would easily pay me 35,000 won per hour.
I suppose one can be lazy and work 30 hours per week at +30,000 won per hour. M-F
OR
One can have great work ethics and work 70 hours per week at 16,000 won per hour. M-Sat.
Personally. I would take the 30, M-Fri. job. |

In the OP's defense, he describes a highly specific situation targeting a highly specific audience, namely bi-lingual Gyopo who plan on spending only a short time in Korea and who want to hit the ground running making as much as possible while not being turned off by longer hours and all the little joys that accompany teaching children.
Can you make more? Sure, if you have a flexible primary job and/or the time and ability to cobble together a string of higher paying gigs. An MA in a related field and experience would surely help.
Horses for courses and all that. His job isn't for everyone, but he said as much from the get go. |

Jeez, working 30 hours a week is lazy? The most hours I've ever had teaching kids was 27 and that was exhausting. |

I agree with this.
Not sure about the approach some take on teaching. This isn't a high quantity hours profession...or at least it shouldn't be.
Increase the quality of the teaching and work fewer 'contact' hours.
There is still prep time, but with experience it gets easier as the years go by.
Personally, I find it discouraging how little some of the 'entrenched' are willing to work for. |

After school (3.0) + 1 hour corporate morning = 4.0million.
6-7 hours a day for 4.0 5 days a week. Hardly huge effort. |

Good example because I know a Gyopo who is doing this very thing. 5 days a week after school and some corporate, and a couple of side gigs. He makes 4.0 and usually a little more. Around 8~9 hours a day and weekends off.
He's been working here for about 4 months. Doesn't seem too difficult to do. |

Man, this post is so overdue....
I've been at the aforementioned academy for about 4 months now. I'm going to list this in PRO & CONS. Long story short: I am satisfied.
PRO
- Pays on time. Never late
- Salary is $4150-$4300 a month.
- They provide Key Money $10 mill
- A lot of workload the first few months but get used to the grind.
- Save money like butter as long as you don't drink and waste on stupid shit.
- Academy is strict with rules like being late, cursing, etc.
- This is a real & well respected hagwon. Not a small mom n pop. All seoul adults know about it.
- Potential to make $5k and above considering # of students.
CONS
- They don't pay rent. Relative to salary, however, still better than most jobs. Seoul rent is expensive. I pay close to $1k with all utilities for my own studio in a clean hotel like place.
- First 3 month is only $3300. Then you get real salary.
- Its a fucking job in Korea so you gotta work. Prepare lessons, be nice to parents and kids, look nice, be presentable, understand culture.
- Jobs only for Gyopos (Korean-Americans) because you need to call parents, you need to understand Korean culture, it's not a pushover job, they expect you to work your ass off. No LAZINESS whatsoever.
- They have CCTV to monitor. But really its just a bureaucratic thing so that they can cover their and your ass if any legal problem arises
- You run into drama once in a while with dumbass students and parents but that's part of the job.
- 6 days a week.
Now, would I re-sign the contract after the remaining months? HELL YES. Why? Considering that they tax only 3% of your salary, You make bank. Most professional jobs don't even pay $3000 a month for entry level. And yes, kids are pain in the ass but if you understand K culture and if you are a gyopo with smarts not some thug type person then this job will enable you to save bank. I am on my way clearing my student debt by end of contract. By end of second contract, I'll have saved $20k at least. So yea, korea got good English jobs for gyopos.
Sadly, the reality is that markets are changing and gyopos are highly favored in the elite hagwons. This is not because Americans are worse or anything like that. They just need the gyopos to be able to speak to parents, understand culture, teach effectively at an elite level to korean students. And at the cost of sounding biased, I have heard from places that they expect and know that gyopos are willing to work the extra 2-3 hours a week since that's how korean culture is and gyopos understand that culture.
You never hear about gyopos bitching and whining about how bad the hours are. That's just not part of our DNA as long as our salary is matched. So yea, please ask questions. I'll answer to anyone that needs help with the process. |
According to the date/s of the post, the end of June put you at about 8, maybe 9, months. How are things going at the job? About the same as the 4 month point at the end of February? Are you still considering a second contract? I mean why not considering you'll be able to save $20k if you do 2 contracts?
