The man, who looked to be in his 70s, arrived at Seoul's Severance Hospital Friday morning with a package that he said was dog meat and seaweed soup

A dog lover, Lippert, 42, had been regularly seen walking his basset hound

Well, given that he is a semi-permanent resident of Korea, Lippert shouldn't be totally shocked that someone would offer him dog meat. Many, if not most, of the people who are here long-term have probably been invited to partake at one point or another.

Granted, this kind of attention ends up providing fodder for the "Look at those crazy Asians" crowd in other countries. But I don't think Koreans should base their actions on what those people think.

True, and Lippert might even have eaten it to get good PR. He seems to want a lot of that.

However, the old guy still can not distinguish science from superstition.

Well there you have it. Most Korean men over the age of 50 are not too clued in to cultural differences.

this is simply a brainless remark by a guy who calls himself Kimchi radish implying that Americans should be given things that they would find offensive because nobody likes Americans. Go Away!

The Korean didn't know.

Give the K guy credit for trying to express his sympathies in the only method he knew how.

Sometimes foreigners (especially Americans) are so aloof on/petty about etc. their personal belief systems that we tend to not see where other people are coming from.

I agree, the spirit of the gesture is what counts. Its embarrassing how many westerners fail to recognize goodwill -or worse, react negatively to it.

I was once offered dog soup at a banquet by a high ranking administrator. I accepted it the in spirit it was offered. I did not squeal and make a scene like certain ' westerners' would. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't order it again either. If you can't respect the culture of the country you're in, GO THE HELL HOME!
