Are you a sock of Steelrails? The guy who made a 12 page thread when I called Koreans Kimberlys.

Look it up in the dictionary. Even Jews (there!! I capitalized it for you!) call themselves that. Or is it now the J word, akin to the N word? Where people not of that group must never use it?

If I wanted to say something anti-semetic, I would. I chose not to.

No, genius. I'm not mad. I'm just not impressed by someone today using the term as the way you've used it is an anti-Semitic slur.

I'm guessing Cave Dweller hasn't spent much time around people of the tribe.

This reminds me of the scene in the film 'Gandhi' where the British diplomat says "But we're British, we're hardly an alien power!" and Gandhi, Nehru, and Jinna all just glance uncomfortably down at the floor.

Or this...

Cave Dweller, let's just say that if you were a person of note, and you used that expression on live TV, you would definitely have to make a public apology and in all likelihood would be fired from your job.

Now, I wasn't sure about your intent, because you said the 'Murica bit, which made me think you were being satirical and playing on the whole exaggerated racism thing in an attempt to show support for Jewish and Muslim holidays. Something I've done as well. That's how I took it at the start, and that's why I posted the "Not sure if serious..." meme. But it appears you weren't being satirical in an attempt to stand up to bigotry but were in earnest. Oof.

Please tell us you were playing an exaggerated character in order to satirize racism. If you did, no problem. Nothing more needs to be said.

I use the term jew just as I would call Australians aussies and New zealanders kiwis. A slang expression being neither positive or negative.

Steelwails you should talk. You are the one who was posting the term 'muzzies'.

"Jew holiday" is bigoted. "Jewish holiday" is not. Get with the program.

In a satirical context. It was portraying a character whose racism against Muslims now, paralleled racism against Irish back then and to draw a comparison between the two, as obviously anti-Irish attitudes are looked upon as something from the embarrassing past, as one day anti-Muslim sentiment will be. The harsh language serves to draw the readers attention to the point that is being made and the correlation between the two. Since I was clearly arguing against anti-Islamic attitudes in the rest of the post, I had hoped and expected that college-educated Dave's readers would be able to read that and grasp the point I was making.

I thought you might have been doing the same thing, especially because you closed with 'Murica. In which case your use of shocking language was part of attempt to correlate being against Muslim holidays with anti-Semitism.

Sadly, you haven't made that point, which is unfortunate.

Your program. Not mine.

I talked to my co-worker who is Jewish and asked him if he thought the term Jew was derogatory. He said no. However, if accompanied by a negative adjective or nasty tone of voice, then yes. I did neither.

Steelrails, I guess I can use the N word as long as it is 'satirical'.

I posted a few links. Check out the usage of the word 'jew'. CentralCali, it seems you have a dog in the fight and I bruised your mangina. I apologize for offending you, but I affirm I neither said nor did anything wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_is_a_Jew%3F

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jew

In the case of the urban dictionary definition, it says the derogatory term is for someone who is a miser. I wasn't talking about that. I was actually referring to Jewish people.

Use the context in which you used it. "He is a Jew" - not bigoted. "He wears one of them Jew hats" - bigoted.

Dude, Cave Dweller, you might want to listen to people on this. The way someone would tell someone from SA that the term "colored" has a completely different context in some places or that the F-word" can mean something different in the UK vs. the US. The expression you used was absolutely verboten outside of a satirical context. I understand your reason and understand that it came from ignorance, not malice. I think it was just one of those mixups that happens within English from different countries.

You could call someone "a Pole" or say he was "Polish". But if you said "I don't support closing on a pole holiday either", that would be a no-no. It would always be a no with abbreviations for Pakistani and Japanese. It would be fine with with abbreviations for British, Swedish, or Turkish. It would depend on the context for Vietnamese.

If you were doing it to make a point about racism against African-Americans, if you did it in the right manner, people would understand. They would know you are actually mocking that sort of backwoods racism and drawing attention to the casual racism that African-Americans face.

Murica is a secular country.

What about the fact that NYC's been closing the schools on some Jewish holidays already? The rationale isn't that the schools are recognizing a religion; it's that the city's recognizing that a significant portion of the students will not be present on certain days. Since school funding is tied to attendance, it just makes fiscal sense to do this.

One doesn't say "Jew holiday" unless one is seeking to be anti-Semitic.
And, if you're an English teacher, you should know that it's "Jewish" since it's an adjective. The word "Jew" is a noun. You're just trolling, obviously.

No, genius. I'm not mad. I'm just not impressed by someone today using the term as the way you've used it is an anti-Semitic slur.

Calling Koreans "Kimberlys" is unacceptable/verboten; you know it.
Using the word Jew that was isn't acceptable, either. I don't need to tell you that, do I? You should know.

Thanks

In your subjective opinion. I don't need holier-than-thou PMs.

I said my piece. I care not to repeat it. I am done with all of you and this thread.

This claim that you have no clue, though you're probably an English teacher and a native speaker makes no sense. You purposely don't capitalize the word Jew makes it clear that you're engaging in anti-Semitism. And then you say to all the other posters that you're done with them. I was very nice about all this. Trolling and engaging in racism, being combative are all those good qualities of a mature professional?
