It's quite an interesting cultural difference. Before I came to Korea I don't recall ever seeing Jesus depicted in cartoon form. Usually in cartoons he'd appear as a light, or as a physical outline of a 'person', but he was never the recipient of the full cartoon thing. In Korea not only do they have cartoon versions of Jesus in posters outside their churches, and in religious schools, but they give him the full "pokemon" effect. Some of the depictions are quite hilarious, as if drawn for young kids. We just never did that back home.
I guess the subject matter was just consided too serious for casual depictions in cartoons. Here, where religious folk can be very, very conservative, they don't seem to have any issue with it.
Maybe it's an "Asia" thing. Everything seems to be given the cartoon treatment. |
