My friend has a male co-worker who wears very large diamond earrings and a huge gold chain around his neck. He is not a rapper but his chain and diamonds look so gaudy and students have asked other teachers about him. These types of accessories are quite unusual for a man and teachers are unsure what to tell students about this guy. Any suggestion?

Is he from the 70's?

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk,
I'm a woman's man: no time to talk.
Music loud and women warm, I've been kicked around
Since I was born.

Without being overhanded or preachy, the best thing to do would just be to say "That's his style; my style is different." and let that be okay.

Not that many men in the west wear pink, perm their hair, or wear make-up. But I dont comment on it or hold a poor opinion. It is their personal style.

My co-worker agrees that it is his style but some of his colleagues think it is inappropriate to give students the impression that his style is common place.

Where does a foreign teacher draw the line between explaining it as another foreigner's personal style and labeling the person a weirdo?

Korea needs to institute sumptuary laws for foreigners. This behavior is outrageous.

If he's the only one wearing these types of things, and the students have asked the teachers about him specifically, I doubt they're thinking this is commonplace.

Lol you guys are so worried about being PC.

Rolling Eyes

NO its abnormal for a guy to dress like a girl and NO its not a good thing for children, its repulsive.

If the school has any brains or actually cares about their reputation, they will implement a basic dress code.

How big is the chain? If we're talking Larry from Three's Company, it seems well within the realm of normal. If his chain is like the wrestler Junkyard Dog's, then it does seem over the top for a school teacher.

Willing to bet those accessories are not that uncommon where he's from. I don't know why you wouldn't expect to see unusual things at a place with teachers from all over the English-speaking world... It doesn't sound very surprising or controversial to me. If the school wants to limit the kids' exposure to individual or cultural styles in order to prevent distractions, they'll have a dress code.
