A 20-something African man spent nearly 6 months living in a waiting area in Incheon Airport. At the end of the legal process, he has become a “free body.”
This is the man who ate a chicken burger and cola for three meals every day..
The story continues.
The Comments section is really interesting.
What do we think about refugees from desperately harsh and tough living conditions seeking asylum elsewhere?
Is it better for a country like Korea to stop refugees coming in?
The Korean people who replied to the article have little sympathy anyway. |

| Six months in Incheon airport is probably much better than the six months in prison he would have gotten in his home country for not doing his military service. |

I once spent 12 hours in the Incheon airport: that was enough.
Also, what's with the chicken burger and a cola for every meal for six months? There are other places to eat in the Incheon airport. Even relatively healthy ones. Or is that what he was given? |

Changi is really the only airport that would be better to be stuck at (what with the swimming pool). Dude must be an ace at calligraphy by now.
On edit: that actually really sucks. At least he wasn't subjected to that stupid parade though. |

Most Koreans would love to dodge the draft. There is a whole industry based on 'birth tourism' just so little Min-Ho won't have to do his bit. |

Most Koreans would like to dodge their taxes too. What's your point?
With the Korean and American tax authorities now crossing each others borders collecting, birth tourism isn't what it used to be.

Lol at the comments - because...... From the English level it sounds exactly like the same person doing every comment...
And there is a stunning lack of detail on the piece - which 'African' country - why did he run from the draft?.. Sounds like there was a lot more to it than just that..the lack of detail has actually fueled the fire of those prone to righteous indignation from a position of ignorance |

The chicken burger meal plan seems like a ploy to push him into abandoning his attempt to gain refugee status.
Here in Canada, refugees stream quickly in, faster than spousal permanent resident sponsorships. Refugees here get well kept, well maintained free apartments with all necessary furnishings, which I have seen with my own eyes to be leaps and bounds better in comparison to hagwon type apartment offerings in Korea as well as the average western commercial apartment rentals. They also get 600$/month per family member and a one time settling allowance of 1200$.
Then they get free ESL classes, job prep programs , dental care and healthcare.
My wife attends the local government sponsored ESL class and it is made up of 90% refugees, while we have been paying tuition of 400$/month. Because we came to Canada in an emergency, (much like refugees) we had to apply for permanent residence inland, so her visa papers are in a 27 month wait list, so she has no healthcare or the permission to work. We only have another 15 months to wait! |
