''The examples go on and on. Simply put, pleading ignorance about racial sensitivity looks ever more dishonest and self-serving.
As an outsider, it isn’t long before you become aware of the deep sense of victim hood rooted in Korea’s national character, most often manifest in dealings with larger and more powerful countries, be it in diplomacy, business or sports. Crucially, being a victim means never having to admit fault. Perhaps this is why Africans can be mocked on national television without a whisper of protest, while jokes at the expense of Koreans cause controversy.
The choice for Korean society, then, seems clear: embrace a modest degree of racial sensitivity, or don’t and duly renounce the right to complain when Koreans become the butt of jokes themselves.''

Good article.
I like how they don't acknowledge that black face and acting like an ape might be insulting to someone from Africa; while they cry when a Hollister model makes a slant eye imitation in photos. or other incidents.
"During the World Cup, meanwhile, one Seoul newspaper reported that Russian fans had mocked Koreans by pretending to have slanted eyes during the game between the two countries."
There's definitely a double standard.
I was just scouring the post her for something interesting. I agree with the positive things about Korea listed in the Korean times article; transportation, internet, night life. Not my intention to just dump on them, there are good things.

Are you talking about the 2014 World Cup? Because South Korea drew 1-1 with Russia and finished below them in the group. |

Russia was ranked #20 and Korea #57. On the field, Russia looked like crap. In all rights, they should have destroyed the Koreans but instead settled for the laziest draw I have ever seen.
Not just the laziest draw, but one of the worst soccer matches I have ever seen.

So Korea's revenge was drawing with Russia then finishing below them in the group?
That sure showed the Russians. |

It was denying Russia the win that they should have gotten. It pretty much guaranteed Russia didn't move on.
I don't know what the shock of the Korean fans was at finishing 4th in their group. They were in a tough group and ranked the lowest of the 4 teams.

Depends which ranking you look at.
I really think you're grasping at straws here.
If Korea had beaten the Russians then I could see your point, but they didn't. They drew.
If the draw with Korea was the game that prevented Russia from progressing then I could see your point, but it wasn't. Russia still had two games to play, and had they beaten Algeria they would have progressed. So the Algeria game was the one that put Russia out.
If Korea had finished above the Russians then I could see your point, but they didn't. They finished below them.
The Russians didn't perform particularly well at the World Cup, but Korea performed even worse.
There seems to be a desperation in your post to show that Korea exacted revenge (are you kyopo by any chance?), but the facts remain that they didn't. |

That was an awful group though, bloody hell - and to think I picked the Belgians before the tournament to do something. |

The Belgians did alright. Being put out by Argentina (who got to the final and were only beaten in extra time) is no shame. |

The way they played though was without the tiniest bit of imagination - with the talent they had too. Did none of the Belgium games send you to sleep? |

Blackface skits are out and instead they're making fun of Chinese and Japanese accents on a regular basis. There was - I shit you not - a sketch of some guy literally going "ching chong nip nong nong" to raucous laughter on Gag Concert or one of it's ilk last month. At least when some other sketch made fun of the Japanese on the show, they actually spoke the language.
I did also see some article recently by a Korean denouncing these shows for what they are: lowest-common-denominator fodder. It's not that Koreans overall are entirely unaware these racist attitudes exist and are problematic, they just have fewer problems airing their dirty laundry publicly. |

Depends on how you look at it. Did they do about as well as expected? Yes. Did they play as well as many of us had wanted them to? No.
I can't remember the games well enough because I didn't have money on them. I had money on Germany. |

Koreans are fine with a bit of racist humour. Just as long as it is not about them. |

Of course it does - because that is some funny shit. |
