Thought I could just get one easily if I had a valid DL from the US. I was wrong. She just kept saying something about an apostille.

From some quick research it appears It might be quicker just to get a Korean license straight up.

Getting an AAA international license would take 4-6 weeks. Not waiting that long.

Yeah, the U.S. license exchange isn't reciprocated easily because the U.S. doesn't allow it with Korea. So hoops, or take the Korean test. You may have trouble finding a centre that will administer an English test though.

I have a US license, and all I had to do was walk in, give them my license, and take a brief, very easy computer test.

Canadian from Alberta. All I did was show them my license. Perhaps rules have changed and they want an apostle of your license. Maybe due to fake license? Don't know...

The issue date on my license April 11th, 2011. It was in Gangwon Province.

The IDP is not valid in the country in which it is issued. Another nifty thing to remember is that it's also not valid for use by someone on any kind of residential visa, such as E-2. Your options are to jump the hoops to get the US license exchanged in Korea or to jump the hoops from scratch to get a Korean license.

Id suggest just getting the Korean license. Assuming you know how to drive a stick, you can do all of the test in a day or two. Also, Koreans seem to be rather impressed with foreigners carrying a "Korean" license. Ive gotten off with "warnings" several times over the years when cops pulled me over, and then were surprised I had a Korean license (which struck up a conversation and ended with just a warning)

Got my license at the end of 2012 (12/31 to be exact). At that time I simply had to go to the U.S. embassy in Seoul to get a notarized form stating my license was legit. From that point, I went to the DMV in my area and essentially swapped out my state license for a Korean one (there are few little things that happened, but not significant for this story).

However, the rule was set to change as of January 2013, and an apostille became required.

Since the DMV for my state is not going to communicate with Korea, I just did an online application for a replacement license in the States and now carry a Korean and state driver's license.

If you want a quick license (but not a Korean one), just apply for an international one; however, I have no idea what constraints there are with it in Korea.

Get yourself a lead pipe. Find a parking lot and wait for someone to come along...
