Hi,

My girlfriend (Korean) recently suggested that we start an "entertainment" account which we can both put money into for our dates and excursions. She said that some Korean couples do this. Previously we had been somewhat alternating (70% my paying, 30% her) and it was okay, but we go out a lot. She will be starting grad school soon and her money will be tight; money-wise I am okay but I like the idea of having a set amount we stick to.

Have any of you tried this, or know anyone who has? Besides liking sticking to a budget, I like the idea of seeing how she handles money and if she will be faithful to our plan. Before we get to serious I want to make sure she isn't too cavalier about money, especially since I am spending much more of it than she is. Our ground rules for the account will be that it can only be dipped into for our outings, and we must both contribute to it. I don't plan to pour money into it to make up for her poverty, but I do think i should give more, though not that much more.

thoughts?

OH MY GOD. That's a precursor to the inevitable conclusion that will happen if you get married. She wants to control your money.

Just kidding Wink

What's the point? Seems totally unnecessary. Bank accounts pay no interest these days. No positives and only potential negatives: resentment and/or worse should you break up.

If you're not planning on marrying her or even in the stages of a relationship where you would consider marriage, I wouldn't do it. Will only cause headaches later on.

It's a somewhat popular trend with university students who consider themselves in a serious relationship. One of my students told me that he and his girlfriend did this because it made it easier to split the bill when going out to restaurants and similar activities. Each put 100,000 won in the account every month. They only use the card/money when they go out together.

I think it's a good idea to test the financial attitudes of the relationship.

It's a good idea, just know that they have become very strict on joint bank account rules here in Korea in the last few years.

The wife and I had a hell of a time opening up an account w/ both of our names on it a few months ago.

Probably you will have to get it setup in her name or your name and then just setup an automatic transfer every month.
